its hard be ing young and having and ileostomy but its even harding having NO friends that can relate to what your going thru. I would love some1 to talk to that knows what im going thru.

I haven't gone through it just yet but as of Tues July 12 I will be! Not sure how long you've had your ostomy for but I know what you mean about it being hard for non-ostomates to really understand. People keep telling me not to worry and stuff and it's like hello my whole life is about to change here! I do my best to stay positive but I'm sure there are going to be days when I need an ostomy buddy and this forum seems to be a really great place so far. I've gotten a lot of tips and read about a lot of things that made me feel alot better about my decision to have the surgery!

Hey Gribby! I'm 22 as well and had my ostomy surgery about 2 months ago. I know it's awkward explaining to people what this "thing" is, but never shy away from explaining what it is to those who matter. If you need someone to talk to, I am also offering my ear. Welcome, Gribby! This is a great place to meet people who understand what you're going through. I've met some great friends on here. We started out by chatting here, then by email, then facebook, then on the phone, and I actually got to meet Peggy twice in person when she was visiting family in Florida! I know several others have met in person, too.

My ostomy is so well hidden under my clothes that nobody knows I have one unless I tell them. I usually wait until I know someone well enough to share my story of illness and surgery, and so far, everyone has been really wonderful and accepting. When someone cares about you and hears how sick you were, they're just happy that you're healthy now. Plus, the way I see it, everybody poops, we just do it differently! smilewinkgrin

Hi Gribby! I am a female 20 yrs and i know it is really difficult but it wasnt as bad as you think. I agree with what everyone has posted, with clothes i wore babydoll tops and shirts that were loose with ruffles that hid the bag that no one could see. I am an open person so all my friends knew and even though they could not relate, they were always there for me. And meeting guys i worried about but they guys i did tell and my guy friends they understood everything and didnt look at me any differenlty like you think they would. Having the bag is so much better then being sick and in pain all the time. Good luck and feel free to e-mail anytime with any questions or concerns :)

Hi Gribby! I am a 21 year old female and received my ileostomy in April of this year. My UC had gotten severe enough I really didn't have a choice and I was terrified of what life would be like after surgery. I soon realized I'd rather be healthy with a pouch then miserable and sick without one!

I'm a 23 year old female and have had my colostomy since I was 21. I know how you feel, it can be hard not having anyone really understand. This is a great place to come and talk with other people just like us.
