Belt(s) at night?

All:

Just curious who wears a belt at night as well as the day.

The reason I ask is because when I wear a belt to sleep, it seems to get really tight on one side and really loose on the other when I turn..so, I have to constantly re-adjust...got tired of that so I decided to take the belt off..one less thing to mess with when trying to get some shut eye..

Am I missing something with the belt?

I don't usually wear one either day or night. But sometimes I'll do it at night if I just changed my wafer before I go to bed. I think it's totally personal preference. If you don't need it and it's just annoying at night, don't wear it! :)

Hubby only takes it off to shower. Doesn't seem to bother him or give him any problems so he keeps it on. Definitely personal preference is the key if it annoys you at all.

I don't and never have worn one either at night or during the day. It would annoy me and when wearing tight clothes, looking at the designs available, would show through. If it works for you then use it, if you don't need it then do wear it if it is annoying. Better to get good night unbroken sleep if the belt is not necessary. Maybe good idea if stoma is inverted or tucked into a roll of skin or if you are having adhesion of wafer issues but apart from that oyu should be fine.

It might be the brand you are using...I only used the Hollister belt post surgery for about a month. Once my wafer could be fully adhered to my stomach I stopped using it.

There's never any right or wrong since we all have different personal preferences! If it's a bother don't use it:)

I only wear a belt during the day. Had the same problem as you--when you shift around at night the belt can pull tighter on one side and slack on the other. I've started using a pouch cover so I don't notice the bag moving around as much at night.

PS--has anyone tried the ostomy hernia belts for extra support? I'm thinking a four inch belt might be useful as the little Hollister belt I'm wearing tends to fold over beneath my stomach.

i wear the belt at night too as well as during the day. i don't pay attention whether it's even on all sides, i just fall asleep :)

KBD -- hubby has 2 of the 4" NuHope belts. He wears them when playing golf or if extra exertion around the house doing things. Otherwise he uses the 1" belts for the extra support for the wafer.

I am placing an order tomorrow for him and we figured we would also order a 6" one to have on hand as well.

I wear them 24/7 even in the shower. It feels weird like it's pulling when I don't have it on.

I'm going to try the 4" Nu-hope belt. I figure the extra support is a good idea.
I only wear the Hollister belt in the shower if I forget to take it off :-)

Just curious as only had my ileostomy in April and never been recommended a belt. What does it actually do? and if in UK can you get it free same as with the bags etc?!

yes, it's free like all the ostomy equipment. at least for us, in israel it is. it helps to keep things more together. w/o the belt, the bag pulls down on the stoma and the stoma area. with time that can cause a hernia. a belt helps to prevent it. also, the bag keeps the appliance tight against your body, so that way it makes wear time longer. AND another thing, if someone has a retracted stoma (like mine), after a while of wearing the belt all the time (except in the shower), it makes the stoma stick out so much more. that's what happened to me after wearing it for hummm around 6 weeks it think. :)

hey, i recommend hollister's. i like coloplast's appliance, but hollister's belt is better. i don't know about convatec's. you can order one of each and see what works best for you. good luck!
