Hey guys. I have to go in for some xrays tomorrow. A barium xray to be exact i think where they put some barium in my colon and take pictures... I got this thing in the mail and it said that I was supposed to take the Pico Salax prep. I thought it was a mistake since i have an ileo and nothiong goes through my colon anyway but the receptionist at my surgeons office said that because i still had working bowels i had to take it. Has anyone else ever taken this prep with an ileo? I hate drinking the stuff. it makes me gag. and im really nervous with an Ileo if i throw up. Sigh. Any help quickly would be appreciated

I always did an enema right before any procedures involving my colon...I really would feel more comfortable with an answer from the doctor/pa/or nurse.

It is very dangerous for anyone with an ileo to do a bowel prep. We will dehydrate with a bowel prep. You need to call and speak with the nurse and have her ask the doctor. Be safe....Tracy

Yeah I read that a lot of places that it's dangerous for ileostomy to take a laxative. But i didnt really feel any concern until now when i have to take it. I feel so stupid. I had 10 days to find out this information but i didn't and now that i need to take it I cant get ahold of anyone. Blah. I talked to an xray tech who is going to talk to someone in raediology and im waiting to call back in a few minutes. but from what Ive read here hospitals and such are very mis-informed about
Ostomies in general. But im thinking if i do take it I will only take one satchet. And not the second one at 5pm tonight.

Success! I got out of taking the bowel prep. Hopefully i dont go tomorrow and get yelled at haha. But I'm going to stick with the clear fluids today (chicken broth, Apple juice water etc) and hopefully achieve the same result. Whew. That Pico Salax stuff is yuckie and hell lol. I gag just thinking about
it :P. Thank you so much though guys for the quick responses. I appreciate it a lot. <3

How did you "get out of taking the bowel prep"?
It's amazing how ignorant that the medical community in general is regarding ostomies.

Dan,
Yesterday morning when i was about
to take the first satchel of the Pico I felt a little uneasy and I was talking to my online friend and was concerned about
taking it because i was worried about
getting dehydrated. He searched online for me and he found an article where a lady was talking about
how she did the prep and was emptying her bag every 10 minutes and how much it stung her stoma and her skin when the magnesium citrate would come out. So i was really nervous about
it. I called the hospital and talked to a tech in radeology and he talked to a doctor for me and said that it really wasnt necissary to take the pico solution and clear fluids for the day would be good enough :D. So i did. and the doctor didnt say anything about
me being not clean enough. I was really happy. :D

I'm glad you found out that info before downing that stuff. 24 hours of clear fluids is more than enough to clean out ileostomates (different story for colostomates though unfortunately - you may still need to take it depending on where your colostomy is located). The medical community really does need to be more educated regarding the different types of ostomies.

Andorable. Not always. Most people with a permanent Ileo have no colon left. Some do. Mine is only temporary. At least its supposed to be which is why im getting all these tests done to make sure my colon is in the proper shape to be reconnected to my small bowel.

Newone,
Glad it worked out .... sounds scary, but you did the right thing in taking your concerns seriously. It would be great if the medical folks knew these things, but we do need to be our own advocates.
