chance of misdiagnosis?

Hi all-

Thanks for the help with my question about my allergy to pain meds, I will speak with dr.s again this week.

New question:  Is there any possiblility that I may have been mis-diagnosed?  I got a disc that showed my Sitz Mark X-ray, then searched online for other examples.  Unfortunately mine looked identical to colonic inertia, compared to a few other examples with other different results (I didn't look like any of those). 

I know this is probably a denial stage, but I'm also just trying to see if there is something else out there that could be causing all of this.

Thoughts?

"Hello, I haven't met you yet, so I wanted to Welcome you here at The Healingwell Site. I found this site when I was looking for a place that I could ask questions about Ostomies. The Ostomy Members really helped me prior to my surgery & after. They have been wonderful :)

I'm Serenitee. I was interested in your post that said, you have a disc that showed your Sitz Mark X-ray." I was wondering what you meant by the disc that showed your sitz markers? When you did the Sitz Marker test, did you do the 1-day, 3-day, or 5-day test?

In April I did the Defacography procedure then a week later the Colon Study Transit test...Where you swallow the sitz markers in 1-capsule, then I had to go back the following day for an X-ray to see where the markers were at, again on the 3rd-day, & again on the 5th-day. Each time I had the X-rays they showed me where the Sitz Markers were at in my intestines & how far they had traveled.

My Colon/Rectal Surgeon first told me that I couldn't take any laxatives for that week...He then said that you are supposed to have at least 80% of the Sitz Markers go all the way thru system & come out by the 5th day. All the Sitz Markers, 100%, stayed way high up in the small intestine. My large intestines, colon & rectum had quit functioning moving nothing thru. They immediately scheduled me for a Temp. Loop ileostomy May 2011. At my appt, 3-weeks later, the first thing my husband & I asked him was how soon before he can make it permanent. He wanted me to wait 3-months & then we would discuss moving forward & doing that. I see him mid Sept. & can't wait to talk about making the ileostomy permanent (removing my large intestine, colon + rectum & anything else needed).

Do you currently have an Ostomy? If so, how are you doing with it? I wish you all the best, & look forward to your future posts.

Loop ileostomy May 2011, Currently Pelvic & Bladder Trauma & Dysfunction caused by...My Colon tore thru the Vaginal Wall, then Colon + Bladder fell out of my body thru Vagina, causing much destruction of my pelvic insides. 15-surgeries over the years on various issues. 2-more this year to come.

Thanks for the welcome, I'm glad to have the support.

I had the 5 day Sitz Mark test with "text book" results for colonic inertia.  The disc was a DVD that had Xrays, notes, ultrasound, etc so that I could take the test results to other Drs for second opinions.

Sooo, with that said, I had an appointment with a surgeon in Denver (Dr Sellers--this is about 2 hours from home), and have booked surgery for Oct 10.  He is going to try to do it laprosoprically, entire colon, attaching small intestine to rectum, no "bag" hopefully.

I'm allergic to painkillers, and I'm really worried about this (I have an earlier post about my painkiller concerns).

I ended up with an ileostomy and actually lucky to get it (only thing that could be done to save my life) result of what turned out to be a disastrous unneeded sigmoid colon removal due to misread of a scan by a radiology resident of a defecogram. I did my 3 consults with 3 colorectal surgeons, but did not know I SHOULD have been going on radiology consults instead. Who would know? (I had no transit issues and my colon worked just fine.)

In your case, it sounds like you have compared your results with those that do indicate colonic inertia. The markers are where they are and I think the Sitz mark test is not as subject to interpretation as defecograms are. BUT, just due to my experience, it wouldn't hurt to just run the DVD xrays by another radiologist or two.

My case not the norm, most tests are done and read correctly. I had bad Karma. Welcome to the Board and good luck, Rosemary

I want to just reiterate that I hope everything works out for you and your health rapidly gets better. I know for me, I did the defacography first...They gave me an I.V., Barium paste inserted in rectum and vagina, then a catheter inserted in bladder.
While holding in the Barium from all openings....Lol. Then I walked to a fake commode, squeezed in tightly between the X-Ray machine. They had me push, hold, cough to try and release barium from bladder, vagina and rectum. I was able to sit right there and watch the process while following there instructions. Without them telling me the results during or after, we were discussing at the time of the test what my findings were. Before the Radiologist told me the findings, I told them what I saw and if I was correct...My bladder and colon were of course my concerns. Bladder and colon since they had both fallen out of my body a year ago, and I was very worried that it was beginning to prolapse. The bladder had been so far, holding into position with the mesh for the 2nd time. However, the Barium to release from rectum would absolutely not come out at all, none! This is my 3rd Rectocele and this one was extremely large. Bulging large sack down and backwards in pelvic region where stool was collecting. However, even as large as the sack was it still wasn't what would cause my intestines to not be moving anything thru.

I'm not sure if this is the "normal" process for that test or not. I'm sure if y'all went thru the same thing then it must be the standard.

Then a few days later (after the barium had all come out), I went into do the Colon Transit Study, the 5-day X-ray process, swallowing the one capsule with the white plastic rings (sitz markers). That test is how we completely found out the problem. 100% of all the Sitz Markers they were all stuck high in the small intestines. Large intestines were 1000% not functioning any longer.

I immediately had surgery by means of a Temp. Loop ileostomy May 2011. By my 3-week Post-Op appt. the first thing my husband and I asked was when could he make it permanent. He laughed and couldn't believe how well I was doing. So my 3-month checkup is in another week, and we will be discussing about making it permanent, removing large intestines (that don't work anyway), sigmoid colon + rectum (which would eliminate the rectocele I'm having pain and problems from.

I was wondering if y'all went thru this process at all or parts of it, and what exactly is "colon inertia" in layman terms?

All my best to everyone that suffers from any chronic medical issues and living your life in a bathroom. May one-day they find a cure for all intestinal medical illnesses.
