Hi everyone, I'm a newbie - been trawling the web for information. This forum is fabulous - thank you!
To my question - how long does it take to recover from surgery? My mother had her surgery performed, and the ileostomy created, three weeks ago now, and she's still in hospital. She's had several complications - chest infection and collapsed lung, UTI and a second bladder infection, endless vomitting resulting in an NG tube being inserted (and endless litres of foulness taken from her stomach)... the list goes on. Now, at the three week mark, she's just able to eat some soup, but not much, and may be some ice cream. Anything else seems to bring on the vomiting again (milky drinks seem to be the worst so far).
They did a CT that showed her bowel "might" have twisted on itself, but the surgeon said that should resolve in time. There's still stuff going into her bag - sometimes very little, other times she has to empty it about
every 20 minutes.
She's lost quite a lot of weight and is now down to a scary 49kg. She's now on TPN feeding to stave off any more weight loss.
The doctors are all saying the bowel is just slow and will resolve with time, but will it? I'm not convinced and can't seem to find anything online to help.
Has anyone else experienced this? Even if you haven't, do you know if this is "normal" or not, or have any suggestions to help her? I'm at wits end!!
Many thanks
Kerro
