Your Pouch Closure . . . Separate Clamp or Velcro-Like Closure?

I am getting good results with convexity, and am trying to find a 1-piece convex pouch to save on the cost when I have to purchase my own appliances next year when my deductible starts over again.

Both Hollister & Convatec with the fabric tape on the outside edges seems to be working well for me in the 2-piece, but I want to try 1-piece.

I really like the "lock & roll" feature on the ones I have been using from both companies.   Both have sent me samples of their 1-piece convex pouches.  Hollister has the closure I like, but Convatec convex 1-piece has the clamp.  

I have never used the clamp, but it seems like it would be more difficult to operate than the "lock & roll", especially in the middle of the night.

What is your preference?

Velcro! So much easier and quicker to clean and I don't worry about accidentally dropping the clip in the toilet or breaking it. And I don't have to find a place to put it when I am emptying.

Hate the clip.

i second the vote for velcro - have been using the Danzac version for 18 months & had no problems - except when in a rush twice i forgot (!!!!) to close the bag at all - i wont be doing that ever again - i've seen the Hollister lock&roll but it doesnt look as solid as the velcro, i may be wrong here - while the clips obviously do work & have done so for a long time, i think i'd be losin them all over the place.

I third for velcro -- all the way. I think the people who like the clamps started with them before the velcro ones existed (but they can speak for themselves).

The coloplast bags close very nicely and are easy to clean. I wear the one piece sensura.

     I like the one piece Coloplast Sensura bags with the velcro closing.  After being discharged from the hospital, I was sent home with a ton of Hollister bags....ugh...I hated them.  Two of them burst on me!!!  It's Coloplast all the WAY!!!  No fuss, no muss yeah .

Pretty much what stephanie(80s chick) said. I would worrry that maybe it would get caught in my pants or I would drop it in the toilet. I like my lock and roll. Never really had any problems with it. Quick and easy.

I use Hollister and though I liked the old lock n roll better, the new one is fine too. I don't like coloplast velcro as much because the sides are open and often a little will leak out the side. The velcro is also bulkier than the hollister. But no matter what, I'd rather have that than a clip.

Always use the convatec with the clamp as cannot atnd the velcro closures. They have to be turned up so many times that it drastially reduces the amount of space in the bag and as I have a high output stoma it means having to empty it twice as much as I would with a clamp one. I have only ever broken one clamp in 20 years but yes when I have been drunk have dropped a couple down the toilet so now if I go out drinking I always put one in my jeans pocket just in case :)

It is a personal choice but just couldn't get on with velcro, too fiddly, too easy to tear the bag and had to fold over far too many times and also could never get the bit clean. I not talking completely clean as not that obsessed but couldn't get it even half clean so I stick to clamps. They've always worked well for me and got used to them and never any problems.

Hubby started with the clip as that is what the hospital gave him.  Hollister brand and then switched to the velcro and liked it much better.

The adhesive bothered him with Hollister and then the Convatech Moldable type so he is now using a one piece from coloplast "sensura" and it has the velcro and seems to be "the one" for him for the time being.

He would always have an extra clip in his pocket the first few months he was using that type for "just in case" situations.  He has had no problem with the velcro type...he makes sure when he folds it up and presses it closed..he presses from the center to the right and center to the left as was suggested by someone to insure against leaks and a tight seal.

I agree with stripey....convatec clamp type all the way. Tried the velcro closure once. Could not get the tail clean. I have been carrying the same "just in case" clamp for four years. Never needed it......even when I sterilized my teeth with too much alcohol. Never had a clamp fail...except a hollister once. No more hollister supplies.

Regarding the filter/vent on the convatec pouch.....the filter is right on top of the stoma and sometimes plugs up. I sent them an email that the filter should be located to one side of the stoma. I got a phone call response! It has been done and the new type will be available in January. They also sent some samples of a pouch with a replaceable filter. Haven't received them yet.

Dan, I know exactly what you mean about Convatec's filters being right over the stoma.   I was pancaking like crazy and told my wound care nurse that it looked like the filter created a vacuum and sucked right onto my stoma.  She said that is exactly what was happening. 

Gonna try the clamp, but I dunno, I like the velcro ones :-)
