Second stoma opening--help!

Hi guys,
I had heard of these second stoma openings, but it had always been a mythical "glad I don't have THAT" sorta thing to me. Until tonight. UGH. When I was changing my pouch, I realized that I did have output coming from the crease right where stoma meets skin at 6 o'clock. The opening to my stoma is poingint downwards, again 6 o'clock and is almost rolled over on itself. I am using a Hollister cut to fit wafer (my stoma is 7/8"), and a convex adapt ring. This has been eh OKAY, I only make it about 2-3 days before I get itching or pain and pressure right at my stoma. I've only had actually 1 full blown leak in the 6 weeks I've had this stoma (which is a LOOP ILEO by the way). The skin right where that 2nd opening is, is red and very raw. I've been putting Stomahesive powder on it with each pouch change, doesn't help much. Any tips? I don't know if this opening is always functioning, I think I'd have had more leaks if so. What sorta stuff do you use to pouch THIS situation? It seems impossible to me.

I'm due for my takedown in 6 weeks, but it'll be a long 6 weeks if this all goes the way I think it might.

Ugh. So sorry you are dealing with that. With my first stoma, the opening was centered but pointed slightly upward and the secondary opening was at skin level. When I would eat stuff that was too thickening, I would have trouble with the 2nd opening. It seemed to me like the food would go past the main opening, collect in the small piece left at the end (I had a loop end ileo) and then eventually work it's way back out. The only things that really helped were to drink lots of fluids with my meals and leave a little room when cutting the wafer so if anything did come out it had a better chance of going into the bag. This wasn't ever foolproof though. It's a huge pain to deal with. :-(

I am doing better as far as the illness goes, but this darn stoma is going to be the death of me. I'm doing my three day change as soon as the nurse gets here (he will be taking out my staples so I want to make sure nothing is in his way) but for the last few hours whenever this thing outputs I get some pretty intense burning right around the stoma. I imagine it's the seal giving up and my skin is just being eaten away. It makes me so angry. I'm starting to think all of the surgeons should be forced to live with a temp ileo for a period time before they are allowed to touch anyone. Maybe they would be more careful with how they make these things.

I know exactly what you mean! I have this soreness and burning too whenever it functions. It doesn't necessarily itch and then when I take it off, there isn't signs of a leak, so I don't know WHAT the deal is. I see stoma nurses Monday with my follow up with Dr. L so hopefully they can help.

Oh, yes...please let me know what they say. I don't see him again until 12/5. I'm curious to see what advice you get from the stoma nurses.

Ugh, that's such a drag -- hope you get some relief soon.

I was thinking that my plastic surgeon should have to spend a week on bed rest with no bending before he can so cavalierly just prescribe it for months on end...... and some snipping of skin sans anesthesia might be good too....

Run,

I had problem from cutting waffer to big once, so around stoma it was real bad. So stoma nurse gave me this thing I called lolypop I would put powder on then open the lolypop open and dab around bad area this made a barrera and gave it a chance to hil.

When I did the pouch change, the skin was just as red but the width of the irritation (measuring from the stoma out) was a good bit smaller. I might try to go to every two days for a little while to see if I get more improvement.

Steel city: be sure to let me know what they say at your appointment. I'm very curious.

You can get an item called cavilon which comes in a wipe or a lollipop. Wipe it over the raw area and it creates a miccro thin covering and helps to protect the skin. If I had any raw areas I always used to put the cavilon on and then use some stomahesive paste, it burns like hell on raw skin for 10-15 seconds but then sticks there prtecting the skin, when I changed bag next time skin was back to normal.

Sounds like your surgeon needs a lesson in what it is like to live with his surgery. Can make 6 weeks seem like a hell of a long time, hope you find something that works for you until then.

Six weeks? He says I have to wait 12 for reversal! It feels like forever. I was thrilled with his work on step 1. I have no idea what in he'll happened this time. Thanks for the tip on the cavilon.

In the US I think you can only get the cavilon "lollipops" from the nurse..... but you can get the wipes from the suppliers.

Ok thanks! Wipes are ordered! Hope they help and the ostomy nurses give me advice tomorrow. What a drag!

Make sure the cavilon is all the way dry before you put anything over it..... hope they help too!
