Cost of Colectomy

Hi,

I have been told by my surgeon that one option for my condition is a total colectomy. As it happens, I am currently in open Enrollment for health insurance at my job and wanted to decide whether to upgrade or downgrade my health care plan in case I get surgery next year.

I wondered if anyone out there could give me a ballpark for the total cost of the surgery. I have no concept, just know that there will be fee from the surgeon, the anesthesiologists, about 5 days in the hospital, lab charges.

Are we talking $10, 000, $20,000, more? If I knew a balllpark figure, it would be easier to compare cost/benefit of going to a better health insurance plan next year.

My bill for colectomy with temp ileo was about $50,000 with (I think) a six day hospital stay. This was the total bill before insurance, etc. I'm a three stepper, so this was just to remove the colon and give me a temp ileo.

Thank you very much for the replies. It is a total colectomy, not a colostomy, though I've been told that colostomy is a contingency plan if I were to get an infection where they connect the incision to the bowel. It sounds like 50,000, might be a good ballpark figure for me to work with. If anyone has further feedback, I appreciate it.

Mine was about $130k, but I was also in the hospital for almost a month (Total Proctocolectomy)
