Narcodic for slowing down out put

My stomach doctor has suggested a narcodic drug to slow down my out put.  I think he wants to put me on Opium.  (sorry about the spelling)  Very afraid to try this. Don't want to get hook on this medication.  Also, my big concern is when I stop taking this drug will my insides go back to what they are now.   Any information will be helpful.

Did you talk with your GI about your concerns? There are a few people at jpouch.org that use tincture of opium to slow down frequency. They have very good success with it. If your doctor has tried other therapies that haven't worked then this might be worth a try. You have to remember that it's not good for an ostomate to have your level of frequency as it could result in dehydration, electrical imbalances and a host of other problems. I think your doctor is trying to spare you further problems due to your high output. If you haven't had this discussion I would go back and talk more about the necessity of it and your fears of addiction.

Thanks Sue for your suggestion.  Been taking lamotal and Imodium since I had my Ostomy surgury a year ago.  Some days are better than others but for the most part food just flows right though me.  Already been treated for dyhydration once and don't won't to go through that again.  Do you know of any body that has taken Opium and there results with it?

Yes, there are some jpouchers that take tincture of opium and have had great success with it. You can also try codeine but make sure you get straight codeine, not codeine with acetemyophin (tylenol) in it.

Did the codeine but did not work all that well. Don't think it was strong enough. Thanks for all your input.....

There are different levels od codeine, how much were you taking and how often?
