Jackie, I'm having the same procedure as you, only in 3 steps, not two.
Yeah, when they take out the colon, they leave in part of the rectum. I do not know or cannot remember exactly why they leave it there. The rectum is always producing mucuous, with or without the colon, that's why we are always having to poo out the mucous.
Then when they connect your jpouch to your sphyincter muscles in the final step, they remove the rectum and the mucous membrane, because these are parts that can get collitis again.
LIke I said, I do not know why they leave it there in the first place.
If I were you, I would put int a call to the surgeon and ask why your rectum needs to be stretched. Sure, he's going to do it as part of the whole take-down procedure, but if you find out why now, then you have a clearer picture, and having a clearer picture is always good for calming down.
