So, there's this young man at my partner's church, just immigrated from a very different place, sees himself as a healer. Seems nice enough, but rather over confident.

I met him yesterday when she had some people over. Then today, at church, he asked more about me, and my partner told him about my surgery (lot of folks at the church know.... I don't go much, as I'm Jewish etc and besides I can't sit now, but they have been very supportive of me).

Anyways, check this out. This guy says that if I pray, God will grow me a new colon. I think he's willing to help me in this task. He is absolutely sure that this will happen!

My partner told him I don't want a new colon.....

Lot of different people in the world, that's for sure.... in any case, since so many of you have shared such wonderful, "Can you believe s/he said that?" stories, I wanted to share this one....

i certainly do not wish to mock anyones sincerely held beliefs & i am open to alternative & complementary medicines/ treatments but i do think it is easy for others to glibly offer 'better' solutions when they are speaking from a position of healthfullness & have not had to suffer the years of sickness

a story i encountered from a neighbour of mine goes as follows - he recounted this to me about 6 weeks after my op so i was just after & in the middle of the whole trauma of it all - be aware that i now know the terminology of the entire digestive system & am therefore quite specific when speaking about this part of our anatomy- he was not & is not aware of any of my medical fun & games -- the story ::: apparently his doctor feared a suspicious growth in his stomach possibly cancerous, he motorbiked to an appointment with a surgeon, had the growth removed with no sedative, anesthetic, he was stitched up & he boasted that he motorbiked back home 20 miles directly after - i was blown away, he seemed to be immune to pain, he was so courageous, brave & strong i felt such a wimp having to take so long to recover & having to have all the pain med when in hospital -- turns out his op was to remove a small mole on his tummy/ abdomen near his navel & not within his stomach - if only he knew what i have been through onlyweeks before !! i didnt rain on his parade

That's funny! Wow, he rode home himself after a mole removal!

It is not at all clear to me that the guy I told you about knows what a colon is either..... although no clue what he might be imagining it is.

And it's hard to convey tone here..... he's very young and very cocky, but also sweet. He really wants to help, and we like him for that, but he's so convinced he knows how to help (and this appears to be for any problem that anyone has), that what he says really is funny. Hopefully at some point he will stop making helping people be all about his need to help and learn to listen better to other people.

Just imagining asking my doctors what vitamins to take to grow a new colon....

I needed a good laugh.

A new colon to regenerate itself huh?  Wouldn't that be a boost for this disease and put alot of GI Drs out of business.

I've had 5 or 6 pre cancerous moles removed surgically and have another appt for one on January 13th and I drive myself to and from.  Imagine that! lol

Well I would take him up on his offer and if it works you could become his manager and market his amazing ability to grow new body parts and set up a clinic and make a fortune! lol

Excellent idea Stripey, except I'm wondering how it works.... I mean, the new colon has to grow at the end of my ileum, and then will it live in my bag while it's growing? Seems like the poop will all be in the wrong place then.... and the bag could get quite cramped and heavy.... or is it just a poof now you're healed sort of thing?

Oh yikes, I'd have to open up this butt wound again too, just when it's healing....

If you somehow grew this miracle colon, wouldn't it just get UC, too? I think I'll pass on that divine intervention!

Does your young man also do new brains? I could use a new one. Mine is 67 years old and must be full up. I can't remember anything new. Ask me about 50 years ago and I am good. If he only does one at a time, I will have to decide.......new colon or new brain...hmmmmm Or maybe a new.....never mind.

Lol that's pretty funny. My brother goes to this "Crystal Bowl" healing thing all the time. I guess if you have pain somewhere or need an area to heal or are even depressed, they put the bowl over whatever area and they make some kind of weird noise and supposedly it heals.
Well anyway my brother kept trying to convince me to come to the session but I really wasn't interested. I ended up meeting the lady who does this and she explained that she does this for a living and she travels to hospitals and heals patients. Well we were discussing that I had my colon and rectum removed and I had a wound there. She asks me what the colon was and where is it located? I tried to explain it to her the best I could. Then she just replied that I should only eat fruits and vegatbles. Lol ok. I just thought that someone who "Heals" at hospitals would have some kind of familiarity with the human body.

Dan, I mentioned to my partner about whether this young man could help us grow different body parts, and she clarified that he would say it was about me having sufficient faith and then these things could happen.... and I guess because it hasn't happened yet, means I don't have enough faith....

Kind of hate that... I mean, if it worked that way, then the people with the most faith in crystal bowl healing or a more conventional religion or whatever would live to be 500 years old or more.....

I was so sick of this sort of thing from true believers of many sorts.... but then the first time I was hospitalized for IBD, talking to a chaplain, I realized that a mature spirituality has humility and compassion, not one-size-fits-all solutions to everyone else's problems... no point in engaging if humility and compassion are not present (but nothing wrong with laughing ....)

I don't even say colon, I tell people my entire large intestine was removed. That sounds more shocking. :)

Then the response is, "You can live without that?"

"Yeh, who knew?"

"How did that happen?"

"Lots and lots of bloody diarrhea. I then had a bag for 9 months outside my body to carry my poop."

"Wow, how do you walk with that?"

"Rather easy, surprisingly."

"Wow."

--------------But it's the nurses in other practices that really crack me up who have never heard of a j-pouch and think it's something outside my body they have to prepare themselves to see when I have to remove my shirt. LOL

I LOVE MY LIFE! One continuous hilarious moment after the other!

Bowels have been providing entertainment to humankind since the dawn of history. Mostly in art histroy. I am remembering an early 17th century painting of a woman farting a candle out. I guess we start out as toddlers obseessed with our poos and at a certain level, always enjoy the joke.
My funiest reaction to telling someone my colon ahd been removed was "well are they going to put it back?" but this was meant in total empathy and I also realized the person was needing a moment to deal with the info.
The Prayer for growing back a colon though ---- made my day like wow.Made me think of the colon being something you can buy in freeze-dried, suspended animation form. Just add water and Presto! Remember sea monkeys?
Btw, does this guy imagine the receving end of his prayer as a mail-order catalog for gardeners?

Seriously, Blue, I have not met so many people who understand that it's just this kind of stuff you need to do (share your partner's spiritual/religious community life to some reasonable degree without oversteppping your own boundaries) to keep the basis of the relationship helthy.

IDLS -- the guy said WOULD. DEFINITELY would.... I thought that what he said was dumb -- never said God was dumb (or that the guy was dumb, for that matter, just this particular thing he said.....)

B'Dereh, my partner is very different spiritually from this guy, and I am very different from her.... but a cool thing for me about meeting someone in middle age was that we didn't expect or want to be the same .... I was muddled on that point when I was younger.

Freeze dried sea monkey like colons, now that's an image.....

I see you learned a lot of important things from your study of art history!

Statements like yours are why I have such issues with mainstream religion. The idea that I have (had?) this horrible disease and god could have fixed it if he wanted to, he just didn't want to help me. It's ridiculous.

I don't know exactly how to say this, and what I say is not meant to be facitious in any way..so, if it doesn't sound right, please feel free to tell me so...

First, because of what I have learned "religiously" (and that is not the right term...) over the past decade, it always humbles me to speak with (whether face to face or through a forum) a person who is part of the nation of Israel. So, it is humbling and happy to hear that you are of the nation of Israel.

Second, w/regards to the helper....again, from what I've learned "religiously" (I guess, spiritually is more correct) of the past decade, people who use "bowls", or other "tools" to heal aren't really working the way the bible (old and new) says to heal.

Third, if Almighty God really does exist, then creating a new colon would not even be a second thought for him. It would be a miracle of course...as, it is not natural in the world God created for that to happen, so, it would have to be a miracle...and, those are kind of hard to come by.

Finally, it hurts me, but not as much as it will hurt others, to see people make statements like that and their intentions/ulterior motives may have nothing to do with actual healing at all....

Enigmawrap, don't know why it should be humbling to speak w/someone Jewish (I guess I think of people who live in Israel as part of the "nation of Israel," not really how I describe myself).... we really run the gamut, and there are plenty of jerks, shallow people, annoying people etc among Jews, just like most any other group (not saying I'm one of them :-), just that I'd rather you relate to me as an individual..... ) guessing you probably don't live in a place w/a lot of Jews (and I'm not actually all that religious.... well, it's complicated, probably too complicated for this context....). But no worries, I'm not upset....

There are a lot of different theologies in the world.... and it's very tricky to try to be respectful, when so many people are not respectful.... I do agree w/you and w/run4pancakes that a lot of people can be cruel when they think they are being helpful.... I go with what I said before, I want to see humility and compassion, not people who think they know what's best for me w/out a) listening to me and b) considering that they might be wrong..... and I try to be that way w/others too ... sometimes it's hard. Lot of ego to set aside ....

I promised myself I would not comment here but I can't let it go. Do you really believe that speaking with a Jewish person is an experience different than speaking with anyone else? Do you imagine that Jewish people need to hear stuff like that? May I ask you to ask yourself why you need to say things like that to Jewish people? Just a suggestion; you don't need to write any answers here.

THanks for the questions.  I have learned to hate e-mail because things are taken the wrong way (and, I'm the worlds worst..LOL!).  This forum is unique because 1) it's medical..and 2) it's worldwide (unique experiences from across the globe).  In some ways, it's also like e-mail..but, we all have been on here so long helping each other, I don't think anyone takes anything anyone says badly, nor does anyone say harsh things.

As far as your questions, the first one is easy - for me, the answer is yes (based on my beliefs).

Second - I can't imagine anything for any Israeli.  Each would have  his/her own feelings on that.

Third - No, I don't "feel" the need to say that to any Israeli.  This just seemed like a time to say it. (And, if the conversation was happening in real life, would have spoken the same words).

Fourth -See second and third answers above.

Hi Enigma,

I think I know what you are trying to say in regards to speaking to someone from the nation of Israel. Is my interpretatin correct in thinking you were trying to say it is nice to meet a Jewish person on here because you have limited contact and am thrilled to meet Jewish people when you can? If so, that sentiment is very nice. However, as a Jew I do find it odd that a) you would be humbled when speaking to a Jewish person (we are no different than any other group of people) and b) to classify all Jews as being from Israel.

I am a Canadian, but am also a Jewish woman whose ancestors came from Europe. I've got nothing to do with Israel other than wanting to visit one day. And I bet you have spoken to many Jews and not known it...we come in all different shapes and sizes: there are black Jews, asian Jews, Jews that have a semetic face, Jews that don't have a semetic face, Jews that are highly religious and wear yarmulkes and sheitels, secular Jews with tattoos...we are everywhere and don't typically start conversations with "my name is XYZ and I am Jewish".

What I am suggesting is that instead of starting a response with pointing out that you are speaking to a Jewish person, just write about whatever you want to talk about. It will probably get you farther.
