Help-Just changed bag 3 hrs ago, took shower, adhesive not sticking

Just did 3rd bag change since discharge and took a shower 3 hours later. Use the Hollister, clear one piece with the paste and it has worked really well....until now. What kind of tape can I use on the edge and skin to keep it from leaking or coming off???

Try the sure seals from active lifestyle products -- they work really well, make things more waterproof, and if there is a leak, they can hold it in. They are clear plastic, like the tegaderm they use for IV's.

Here's the website http://www.alpglobal.com/ . They take forever to send samples, but I got samples from edgepark. Get the square ones that are larger.

Others have good results w/tape, but I can't remember which brands.

Yup, sure seals. I learned about them from here and I am so happy I did. It's nice to be able to just jump in the shower and only have to dry the bag. I used to get itchy when the flange got wet and my skin would get irritated cause the water trapped underneith. Then the edges would start lifting.
I used to use the tape before I learned of sure seals, but it was kind of a pain trying to "picture frame" it and even then it was hard to cover the whole thing.

You might want to wait a bit longer before getting in the shower, and do you use skin prep? If you do that's your culprit.
But like they said you need sure seals, best thing ever!

Thanks for your suggestions. I will try to locate those sure seals. We used silk tape and hopefully that will hold. She ended up being readmitted to our local hospital last night. 19 days in hospital for surgery and complications, home 7 days, now in for terrible pain, probably from abscess that is not resolving. Poor thing is just so discouraged and so tired of being in pain. The bag seems easy compared to everything else.

We used Hollister 2 pc bags with sure seals. The adhesive spray and powder was a huge help. I would recommend the shower first and then the bag change. She WILL get thru this! Email me if you need anything!

So sorry to hear that she is having complications... we know about them all too well. Our last surgery was stage 2 Jpouch, released after 5 days then back in the hospital 3 days later for another week. She will get through this. and so will you.

My son was allergic to the Hollister wafer (adhesive) so we tried the Coloplast Xpro two piece system. He has had no reaction to the adhesive and they have worked very well together with the Adapt Barrier rings. we only have to change the wafer every 5-6 days. The Coloplast wafer adheres better once it heats up to your body temperature, so after we put a new one on, he waits for about 5-10 minutes to move about and he has had no problem with them coming "unglued". I would love to know more about the Sure seals. We have never tried those. Brandon just tapes a large baggie over the bag and wafer when he showers. I would also make sure that her skin is very dry before putting the new wafer on so that it adheres well and be sure to wipe the skin clean of any adhesive remover residue. We learned that by trial and error!

My surgeon's office just gave me the biggest compliment yesterday ( I think ). they named me honorary Stoma nurse...LOL!!

Thanks again for all your help. None of the local places seems to carry the sure seals, so we'll place an order through the suppliers that our insurance uses (First Line Medical and Liberty Medical). Any experience with recommending one company over the other? Just went on their website and it looks like you have to order Sure Seals through Edgepark. Do they work with a onepiece Hollister clear bag? Do you feed the bag through the hole?

From your comments, I also wonder if the adhesive not sticking is from the Home Health care nurse not making sure the skin was completely dry before placing the wafer. I did not watch this 3rd time, but I will tomorrow. Laura has a loop ileostomy and it is oblong with uneven sides. I have no idea how she could cut such an odd shape by herself because she can't see the bottom of it and she has to cut the opening off center to keep it from covering her belly button, but I guess once it stops changing size, she will be able to get a good template. The nurse always starts to mark it off center on the wrong side and Laura has to correct her. It is confusing and so much to learn!

She just got released from the hospital today for the new terrible pain she was having. This was just a 2 day stay. She needed the JP drain repositioned as it wasn't draining the abscess enough. The surgeon's nurse told us to go to our local doctor for the increasing pain instead of seeing the doctors at the big teaching hospital where the surgery was done. I thought that was very odd but it seems to have worked out fine. Hoping things go smoother for her now. School starts Tuesday and she is determined to go. I never knew being a Mom could be this hard. I've had more tears this past 6 months than the past 50 years. (I try not to let her see them!)

We have the sign problem with the loop ileostomy being an odd shape. The end ileo was so much easier to cut the wafer for. I have to cut the wafer for my son and with the loop ileo, I am always cutting the hole too big and the skin around his stoma is getting very irritated from the poop on his skin. The stoma nurse told me to try putting the barrier ring directly on his skin and then applying the wafer, so that we could get a better seal around the stoma. Do you use a convex or non-convex wafer?

You aren't supposed tho shower for 24 hours after you apply a new wafer(yes, I read the insert ONCE!!). So the shower so soon after is the culprit.

When you order the sure seals make sure your insurance will cover them. Mine doesn't so I use www.medicalmega.com and they are MUCH cheaper even with paying for shipping.

Hang in there...recovery isn't always easy especially when some are so sick before it and the drugs taken before it can mess it up:(

On 9/19/2011 I was admitted to the hospital . I had a ruptured diverticuli and an abcess. I spent a week in the hsopital on antibiotics and pain killers. I went home for a week. A few days after I returned home, I was in pain again. Went back to the hospital. I had to have emergency surgery. My intestins had ruptured. I ended up having 2 feet of my intestins removed and a ileostomy bag put in. I have been using medical glue to help keep the bag in place. I have also been using adhesive remover and deoderant for the removal of the bag. I have had a leak or tow but I am still learning about all of this. I am to weak to get into the shower but I have been taking sponge baths to keep myself clean. Edge Park Medical has been wonderful in helping me with the supplies as well.

So sorry she's still having trouble. You will work this out.

The sure seals can be cut to fit any pouch (as long as you have the big ones, the little ones are too small to fit most pouches). I wear a one piece, and what I do is first cut the hole in the middle a little bigger. Then I cut the whole thing in half. Then I fold an cut off a few pieces to avoid my belly button, pubic hair etc. Then I peel and stick on. It might sound harder than it is.... takes less than five minutes total now.

I probably could feed the bag through the hole (as long as I first make the hole bigger) but it seems easier to just cut to fit half at a time. I imagine that the sure seals are a bit easier to use w/two piece pouches.

You can use ostomybestbuy.com or it might me bestbuyostomy.com. you can also sometimes get them off ebay. Anyway, I don't ever worry about cutting the actual shape I just cut mine a tiny bit smaller and it squishes through where it has room. Not getting the area dry can be a big problem. Are y'all washing the area first? If so what are you using?
