I've been using the ConvaTec Esteem Synergy Self adhesive
closed pouches (Product code S1054N0) with mouldable flange
(S1181) since 2005.
During that time, I’ve been able to remove the self-adhesive
pouches from the flange with ease, being able to do so many
times a day and per week without issues.
The flange, which adheres to my abdomen, over my stoma, gives
no cause for concern and I would normally replace the flange
only one or twice per week.
If it were not for bathing or showering, I could probably wear
the flange for 7 days before the need to change it.
However, since my last order of supplies over Christmas 2011,
the self adhesive pouches, when removed from the flange are
leaving as sticky adhesive residue behind and on occasions,
the self adhesive foam is also tearing and remaining stuck to
the flange, all of which is making the changing of the pouch
difficult.
It’s almost impossible to clean and remove the sticky residue,
and or the foam from the flange, especially with output from my
stoma having a mind of its own.
I have no choice but try and removed as much of the sticky
residue as I can and then apply a new self-adhesive pouch onto
the flange and over the sticky residue.
By doing so, I’m able to apply a new pouch but due to the sticky
adhesive residue left behind, the new pouch does not adhere to the
flange as securely as it would normally if the sticky residue was not
present.
I also have to change the flange more often now, as after I have
removed and replaced three or four pouches, the sticky adhesive
residue builds up to such an extent that a new self adhesive pouch
will not adhere strong enough and will eventually leak.
I have contacted ConvaTec and explained the issues of which I’m
experiencing and they have sent replacement pouches but from
the same batch, so the problems still persist.
ConvaTec have sent alternative pouches, which are only slight better
and do appear to adhere ok but are not really suitable and are still
leaving an sticky adhesive residue behind.
It is my belief, for whatever the reason, that ConvaTec have
changed the adhesive used on their pouches, yet ConvaTec deny
this and state they have had no complaints or queries with
regard to the issues I’m experiencing.
This may seem trivial but I had found a product that made
living with a stoma so much easier. I was able to lead a
normal life without the fear or worrying about changing the
pouches or leakage.
I would rather ConvaTec rectify the issues I’m experiencing rather than
seeking an alternative appliance from a different supplier.
Therefore, if forum members are experiencing the same or
similar issues with self-adhesive pouches manufactured by
ConvaTec, please notify their Customer Service Team and make
ConvaTec aware of such issues.
