I know that they form in the small intestines, sort of like scar tissue, and can cause blockage.

Do they form in the small intestine after the colectomy, or after the jpouch-forming operation (in the 3 not the 2 step process) or after take-down?

Is there a high chance of adhesions developing after take-down?

I don't think adhesions form in the intestine..... they are extra scar tissue that can be around the intestines ... kind of in between organs, where there isn't supposed to be tissue. They can prevent organs from moving as they should and also choke them off.

As I understand it, they can form after any abdominal surgery, but are less likely w/lapro surgery.

Also they come from handling organs etc.... so I would think less likely in the take down as it's a shorter, simple surgery where things don't get handled as much.

Just my take.... not a medical dr, of course....

Stop worrying yourself about this. I know it is difficult seeing what Jackie is going through, both out of concern for her and because you have take down coming out soon, but you have to stop the worrying. I haven't seen a definitive answer from her yet as to exactly what happened to cause her to need more surgery. Also, think about how many of us went in around the same time and haven't had any problems. There is a risk of adhesions with any abdominal surgery. I agree with blueglass though, the takedown seems the least likely candidate as they are doing a lot less in there, aren't making a new incision, etc.

Relax. You will be fine!!!

Well it's just a shock, because Jackie is the youngest of us and she went in there with hope and energy volume turned way up and fully expected to be out of there on Wednesday and go to a huka bar. We all know she's going to get through this, it's just weird because we've come with her this far electronically, and this forum has truly been my only form of solidarity and information. I hope she'll write exactly what the complication is, I'm not understanding about the gas that won't drain or what they want to fix in surgery tomorrow.
(Jackie you will probably read this, and I apologize to be writing of you and not to you.)

Anyway, thanks for telling me again that I should stop worrying. But I am going to ask the surgeon if he will use or has used adhesion barriers, but becauase I've had lapro all the way, I doubt it.

Adhesions can form with any abdominal surgery. I've only had step 1 and had three surgeries in a course of a month so far. I know about adhesions.

I am the queen of adhesions and what blue said in the first answer sums it all up. If you have had larpo all the way I would not worry about adhesions. Much LESS likely to form than with open surgery. Rosemary

Rosemary, if you're the queen of adhesions, then I must be the princess! wink

B'Dereh, I know it's easier said than done, but try not to worry about adhesions. It's good to be informed, though. I'm not sure if Seprafilm can be used with lapro surgery, but it's a great question to ask your surgeon!

Yeah I would say you would be the princess of adhesions. BUT so far just think 4 years I have gone without an issue, I just pray this keeps up. Glad you have been so far well since your last bout. Rosemary

dont worry about adhesions. i had peritonitis 2x and 4 abdominal surgeries including my take down. i figured i would be loaded witj them as did my dr. when he opened me up, there werent as many as they thought.

my dr is one of the top gi drs in the usa and he says there is only about a 0.5% increased chance of a blockage each year. also, he doesnt use barriers as he says it is all about technique and skill for removal.

i was convinced that i wouldnt have my reversal b/c id be so loaded with them. dont seeat it and just enjoy life. good luck.

Yes, adhesions can happen with any abdominal surgery and some people are more apt to form adhesions than others. It has nothing to do with the age of the patient.

There is some type of adhesion barrier that can be sprayed in if lapro is done, though with lapro there is such less chance of adhesions forming. Each person's body reacts differently to healing and adhesions. Too bad there is not some sort of test they can give you prior to a surgery to find out how one will do. Discuss your concerns with your doc. Some of these barriers are known to make things worse if there is any bleeding, I think that one is Interceed. There are so many on the market. Spray Gel is big in everywhere except the US where it is not yet FDA approved and it is made in Waltham MA ironically.

Adhesions more apt to form if one has had multiple prior open surgeries they are more likely to get adhesions the more open surgeries they have. It is a cumulative affect. Also the invasiveness of the surgery and the length and the manipulation of tissues as well as technique are all factors. Rosemary
