At a dinner party with some of my best friends and a girl who I'm really close to. Guess what, my bag leaks halfway through.
I can't even be bothered to go into the details. Needless to say I'm so upset. I feel like my world fell down around me tonight.
It's probably self pity at the moment but honestly, I wouldn't wish that situation on anyone.

If it makes you feel any better the same thing happened to my husband. (3-4 months after surgery) We had 2 other couples here. Hubby had made several trips to the bathroom and I knew from the look on his face things were out of whack. A leak began and he thought he could control and contain it until they left. I knew it was time to cut the evening short and fortunately it was getting near the time for them to leave anyway. I made an excuse that I was tired and had a very early morning next day so they took the hint. I saw them out and hubby stayed sitting at the table picking things up. He flew into the shower....it was a tough change that night as it kept pumping out stuff. As we looked back on the evening he had chinese food and junk food that night which was after other foods for lunch earlier and everything combined was too much for his system to handle. Sometimes I think he is eating too much and thinking it is gonna happen again. He drinks/sips a lot of water all day and that seems to be keeping things under control.
We went to a fair the other day and I knew it was going to be a 12+ hr day. I brought a large purse and had an extra pair of underwear and a full change for him just in case. Every couple of hours he would go to a men's room and make sure everything was ok.
We can do all we can to try to be prepared but knowing that your type of situation will happen at some point to all of you is upsetting but your close friends and family care very deeply about
you so do try to not let it get you down. Those who care about
you are more concerned and happy you are no longer in the pain and have had life saving surgery and I am sure feel bad knowing how you feel about
the mishap.
I understand your feeling of self pity...it's a normal feeling and reaction to the situation. Tomorrow will be another day and a better one.
When we have special plans I am trying to get him to be a bit more proactive (I'm not sure if it even makes a difference) and change his schedule and do a full new change especially if it is close to a change day so as not to push it. When we travel I think I read about
eating lighter the day before and the day of to keep the output down to a minimum and keep a leaking situation at bay. I don't know if there really is a rhyme or reason to all of this and I don't spend every moment thinking about
it....just try here and there to think about
what we are going to be doing and when.
Even though it has been 15 months and overall he is doing well I still sense some inhibitions and holding back on venturing onto different things and it probably has a bit to do with worrying about
leaks. I think from the different accounts and stories people honestly share here with some of their mishaps we have to find a way to accept it. Get aggravated for awhile and then try to get over it so it doesn't put you in a funk as that is not good either.
{{{HUGS}}} and I hope things seem much better tomorrow.

4 and a half years for me and SO FAR no leaks. I can also share my appliance type and procedure with you if you need.
I know, we all run that risk, but frankly the risk of adhesion recurrence scares me more than the leak issue, but SO FAR 4 and a half years on that not happening too, so, it is all one day at a time for all of us. MUST be a bad experience though, just the same. I can just imagine it. Auuugh!

I'll take your advice NascarRon and esoR!. I'm almost 12 years in and though I don't leak that often, I still do some times... I've gotten back into running and find it difficult to keep it on after sweating...
I've used the same appliance essentially since the beginning...
Do tell...
Thanks

1. When you change your appliance do not wash with any soap that has any lotions or scents as it does not totally come off and can lead to issues. So ivory then rinse well or just sponge off with water after you get the old appliance off. Also get all the old sticky off with the unisolve adhesive remover wipe.
2. Then be sure the skin is dry and apply a barrier wipe such as all care, cavillon, whatever brand you like. These 2 seem good as they put down a nice sheet of laquor on your stomach. LET IT DRY! That is key.
3. Then I put Stomahesive paste around the hole I have cut in my stomahesive convatec wafer. Then I put that on and press down all around the stoma on the plastic part of the wafer, then press down the paper part.
4. Then put some ivory soap tiny bit around the ring on the matching bag so that when you click it on it goes on easier. Then roll up the end.
5. I have to change tomorrow and ate way too late tonight. NOT GOOD! Normally I stop eating at 5 pm the night before a change so that my stoma is not active when I change. Tomorrow may be tricky. Plus today I ate chocolate. NOT GOOD! We shall see.
But those are my hints.

Thank you to everyone for your kind words. I was feeling very upset last night, but I certainly feel better about
it today.
Somehow I managed to disguise the fact I'd leaked by saying I'd felt really sick and needed to sit by the toilet for a while. Only a couple of the friends I was with actually know about
my situation, and I certainly wouldnt want them knowing about
a leak to be honest.
Sorry for the confusion though - it wasn't a leak - it was a faulty bag. The adhesive on the Velcro flap had come away meaning that it was barely holding the drain able flaps together. I think I have a faulty batch of bags as I've noticed this on several of them.

OK, so you handled that fantastically. It is really a horribly upsetting and chaotic thing when these leaks happen, I went through it loads and so did basically everyone with a stoma. I had leaks mostly during the time when the stoma is young and starts shrinking, but also every so often for various reasons, like it got too full in the night, or my clothes were too tight or the stuff ws too thick and started pancaking. After the first scares I just made sure I always had gear in my bag, enough for two changes with the garbage bags, small scissors, eaken rings and compresses. I am equiped to do a change anywhere, anytime.
Right, and it happened once at a dinner party too. I noticed right away, got up and went to the bathroom and changed. That time was weird because this friend having the dinner didn't have a lock on the bathroom door. There came a point when I didn't get upset anymore, I just got up and did what I had to do.
Main thing is, you managed things with no one finding out and you feel ok about
it today. Hopefully that's the last time that's going to happen. How many more days? You've got like 24? Piece of cake.

Thanks B'Dereh. I can only hope one really realised, which I'm pretty sure they didn't. I had to wash my jeans in the sink and then dry them with a towel. It wasn't just a bit - it was A LOT! Hopefully I'll be able to laugh about
this one day - not last night though, I must have been awake since 5am. It might sound a bit dramatic, but it felt like a real trauma at the time. Awful. Especially for it to happen when you know who was there.
Yeah 24 days and HOPEFULLY no more leaks/incidents like that!!
Are you excited yet?

I think you are going to laugh about
this fairly soon. The people probably just thought you were having a long, difficult poo session or something. Most people don't know about
stomas and bags. But I read your post about
what happened with the velcro and what must have happened with your jeans. That was a raw deal on your nerves, and compounded because SHE was there. Probably, she was really worried about
you being ok, but didn't want to cross that boundary by asking, things being in such early stages between you. Did you drive her home? Did she ask anything?
By the way if it had been just a normal leak, it would just have been some moisture seeping through the seal and with me it usually doesn't even get on my clothes, I just have to change the bag. You should call the company and have that box of bags replaced.

And no, I am not excited, I cannot get my head around it and it doesn't seem real. It's like, I just have this appointment.

Yeah well she was driving so drove me home. Once I got back, I texted her to say sorry for not being myself tonight and feeling 'ill'. She was asking if I was ok and I just said yeah I'm fine. She then asked again if I was sure I was ok, so I just said I'll be fine in the morning once I have a sleep. Hopefully she was concerned and not thinking I'm some sort of weirdo disappearing off to the toilet for 10 minutes at a dinner party.
I wouldn't say I'm excited in a fun sense, because I know it will be difficult and there could be conplications. To be honest though, after last night I'll be glad to get this bag off my stomach.

She was definitely worried about
you and wanted to make sure you were ok. Get this: she cares.
And once in a while everyone will have to dissappear into the bathroom for 10 minutes, happens to everyone. Even her. Imagine that

I didn't realize from your first post with no signature line that you are very soon heading for your takedown...YAY for you!!!
This will be done and over with soon for you and you will have your wish to not deal with the bag any longer. I truly hope you have a good recovery and things fall into place for you in all respects...physically and personally with your gal.
For the time being you'll need to deal with this temporary inconvenience and hopefully have no other problems. And yes it will be less and less of an issue as each day passes, but it is so totally understandable how that messes up your emotions. Hopefully you will have a nice weekend. {{{Hugs}}}

Thanks UC wife, that's very nice of you. I will be glad when the ordeal is over and I can go back to living a 'normal' life.
Only a few weeks and I'll be beginning a new journey...hopefully a much happier one.

Maybe for the time being carry a small binder clip or pouch clip just in case you need the extra reinforcement?? My husband uses the velcro type closures but always has a clip in his pocket for "just in case" situations.

Ricochet glad you're doing better. Just out of curiosity, which brand of bag was faulty?

Thank you. It was a Dansac convex bag, usually they're fine, but this batch seem really bad.
