The only times I've experienced pain in my hand from an IV it was because it wasn't put in properly. I got them to change it straight away - you shouldn't ever feel pain in IVs...

agree. you should never feel pain in your hand with the IV. Get them to take it out straight away and site it somewhere else.

Glad you are feeling better with your iv, it only hurts me when it gets backed up or they push phenogen or potassium and don't dillute it.

Hope you are getting some good drugs and healing well!

When I was on vancomyacin, I'd have to get the IV changed every day or two -- it burns through (nurses call it drano).... agree w/the others, though, it might be annoying and get in the way, but it shouldn't hurt. Glad they're changing it.

FYI for anyone who may have to go back in and have things done in the future, a PICC line it totally worth it.  It is painless to put in, you just feel pressure and you can get all your IV meds and have blood draws without pain!  I used to have a medi-port but had it removed just after my surgery and had the PICC line put in for all my meds.  It can be longer term or more short term depending on your situation.

Glad they got in there and got it taken care of - as everyone else said there should be no pain from your IV if they have done it right.

TOTALLY!! I will never ever ever go into the hospital knowing I'm staying for more than a day without a PICC line. I had them for both of my surgeries by my request. (i had a central line put in during my first surgery because i was so sick) I have terrible veins and IVs fail within 24 hours. plus its impossible to draw blood from me since the one pokable vein has an iv in it. All PICC all the way!

I hope I never need an extended hospital stay before I am too old and confused to care, but I would love to have had a PICC line if it does happen before then. They put me through hell trying to find veins during the three weeks I was hospitalized, and had to bring in that huge vein finder a few times. Once they stuck me 8 times in an hour before finding a vein. It was sheer torture.

Thats very intersting allblue! I have terrible veins, both for IVs and blood draws, and have actually left hospitals without them being able to do either. Its been recommended to me by doctors several times to have a PICC, but I've always refused and the first time I completely burst into tears as it was kind of just all of the sudden dropped on me. I literally dread every single morning at 6 am when they come to draw blood. I'm terrified of it and it never works...I end of staying up all night thinking about it.

It is very comforting to hear that it really is not that bad. It really isn't painful? Not that I don't believe you, it's just hard for me to imagine that something like that couldn't be painful. How long does it take from beginning to end to work? I know I'll have more hospital stays throughout my life and I guess I'm fearfully interested how it works and all that! The IVs and bllod draws are just soo painful for me that THEY are literally the reasons why I refuse to go to the hospital even though I know I need to.

I was scared to have a PICC line, too, the first time they offered it to me, but once they explained it, I agreed and loved it. It was not painful at all, because they numb the area before sticking you with the needle, and it only takes about 15 minutes. Once it's in, it's great, because they can draw blood without sticking you and administer IV fluids and meds without any pain. It's definitely the way to go! :-)

Wish I had had one when I was on vancomyacin -- that made me look like a heroin addict, it blew out a vein every day or two. They were going to give me a PICC line if I was in any longer or needed IV's at home, but I got out.

Sarah a 6 am blood draw could be worse-- mine was more like 4 am (they wanted all the #'s ready for the docs by 6 or 7 am). I hate it when they go "Ms. XXXXX, Sorry to wake you up....." I want to scream, "Then don't do it!!!" I mean, it's not like they accidentally bumped me in the hallway....

the only pain from the PICC is getting the lydocain (sp?) numbing shot. It burns, but feels no worse than a really bad pinch. that dissipates in about 30 seconds. way less painful that having an IV not go in.
