Welcome, Derillion, I'm really glad you found us. I suffered with Crohn's for 7 years and tried all of the medicines, too. In 2006, I had the same surgery that they're recommending for you and have nothing negative to say about
it. It has given me my life back. I can eat anything I want, do anything I want, and am living a completely healthy, normal life.
Like everyone else has mentioned, the surgery part is not a walk in the park, but they do give you excellent pain meds, and it only lasts for a couple of weeks. In fact, it's easier than a Crohn's flare, so you've been through worse. But, the good news is, you will will heal, and you will get your energy back.
Life with an ostomy (in my opinion) is no big deal. Nobody can tell that I have one, because it lays flat under my clothes. I honestly forget that I have one. Going to the bathroom is a breeze. I sit down to pee and empty the pouch between my legs. It has a velcro closure, so you just un-velcro it, empty, clean off the end with tp, roll it back up, and re-velcro it.
There's no smell with an ostomy, except when you empty, but there are excellent deodorizer drops called M9 by Hollister that I put in the pouch to mask the odor. I also only have to change the wafer that sticks to my skin that holds the pouch once a week, and it's a quick, peel-and-stick procedure that is really easy.
I can exercise, work full time, shower every day, swim in the ocean or pool, you name it - there are no restrictions with an ostomy. I hope that our feedback helps ease your mind about
this. If you have any questions about
anything, please feel free to ask. We're all here to help!
