hi guys!!! i know most of you already have your ostomy experience and there are so many great blogs out there but if you know anyone presently who wants to go through one thats comin up... i finally got my surgery date!!! iknow its going to be rough and cant rule out complications and the stress of ostomy life. but im so excited to get rid of this SEVERELY debilitating disease!!! talked to my colorectal surgeon today and will be having surgery August 1!!! updated my blog with specifics from today and trying to make it as helpful and informative as possible. so check it out if you think it may help or know anyone it may help!!! myulcerativecolitisstory.blogspot.com! thanks guys for all you have answered for me and continue to help others! your great!

Oh im sure ill still be on here posting updates too but the blog will be more in depth and show the first hand experience!

I had my colon removed laproscopic in Dec and even though I have had some complications with fistula, the ileostomy is nothing compared to the UC. My blood count is higher than it has been in years and best of all I am drug free! Some helpful hints, eat marshmallows before you remove your appliance and shower, it stops the stoma from working and I normally do this first thing in morning so I can take a good shower and have no discharge while putting on a new wafer! Good Luck and once I got a pouching system that works, I went back to work, horseback riding, swimming, haven't let it slow me down to much...

I read the blog! Thanks for doing it! It's going to help you and many others!! We both have our faith, hope, and confidence in HIM and that is the most important thing. Also the cute fiancé is a real bonus! Will be wanting some "girly, wedding" details! I am a floral designer, so I love that kind of talk!

My surgeries were in Jackson, MS at Univ. of Miss. Medical Centers. I love a teaching hospital and am glad you are there. I have the utmost confidence and respect for my whole team. Doctors, nurses, lab, and pharmacy friends are so good.

I just wanted to mention one thing, that it sounds like your surgeon wasn't clear on. There is no way to "rule out Crohn's" from testing your colon. They test for granulatomas, and if you have them, that definitely means you have Crohn's, but not everyone w/Crohn's has them. So, unfortunately, it's either "Crohn's" or "still not sure, but probably UC."

I have been officially indeterminate the whole time, and my diagnosis has shifted back and forth. My gi symptoms looked like textbook UC, but I had a rare skin condition that made my gi almost certain it was Crohn's, which was part of why I opted for a permanent ileo, but then he was shocked when biopsies of my colon showed no granulatomas. He still thinks it's more likely that I have Crohn's (it's all complicated, won't go into every detail).

My gi says that Crohn's is probably about 20 different diseases and UC is ten.... not clear how the diagnoses will change as the genetic research gets better. He thinks if I have UC, it's a "Crohn's like" variation, that would be more susceptible to complications w/a j pouch.

But that's me, not you. Hope your biopsies are clean and things can proceed as you are hoping. You sure are ready, and have been through enough.
