Irrigation vs. bags

I'm curious to know whether folks who have had a colostomy prefer to wear and have to empty their bags all the time or if they prefer doing the irrigation thing couple of times a day.

What are your opinions on the pros and cons of each?

I personally hate wearing the bag.

I have heard, from my ostomy nurse, that some people in time can "train" their bowel movements to go only once or twice a day. How do they do that??? I'm pooping in my bag almost all day long.

Hi there and welcome.. I have an ileostomy, so I have no idea I'm afraid. There aren't many colostomates on here, but hopefully someone will be along soon with some advice or ideas.

Irrigation is only an option if you have part your colon.

Go to the UOAA website...click on discussion area on the left....there is a separate area concerning irrigation for colostomies. Hopefully you can get a lot of info and insight there.

If you are eligible to do this... after learning how to do it, you basically take an hour each morning and then yuo only need a bandaid type covering over the stoma until you empty the next morning as I understand it.

D'Bereh,

I do still have all my colon. Only my rectum had to be removed. I'll check the UOAA site Another UC wife mentioned.
