Good news! I called the insurance and my ostomy supplies are covered! YAY! I'm doing a happy dance ;) I have to pay only 10% and there is no limit on how many or what I get. . .IS it silly to get excited about ostomy supplies? This is definitely a load off of my mind.

 

I had a feeling you would find that they would be covered.  And, 10% is awesome.  I have a $750 deductible to meet each year before mine will pay anything, and once met it is 80%.

No, it is not one little bit silly to get excited about ostomy suppies.  It is common on the message boards to find the comparison of the arrival of a new box of supplies to the excitement of Christmas :-)

So glad to know that things are falling into place for you.   You will be amazed at how well you feel after you recoup from surgery.

Do you mean the tatoo to mark your stoma? I got mine today too! Happy tattoo day! It hurt a ton less than UC!

Happy Tattoo ActiveUCer! When is your surgery scheduled? The only thing I'm really not digging about all this is the two enemas I have to use! ACK! Like my rear's not raw and sore already....oh well. Gotta do, what you gotta do.

hr....my next question if you hadn't gotten an answer is how the heck can an ins. company approve a certain kind of surgery to begin with and not allow the supplies that are needed to maintain quality of life after said surgery...sooooo happy you got to the bottom of it.

What I did with my husband's situation is prior to the surgery I got everything set up with the supplier (Edgepark in our case). This way an account was already established and they had all the ins. info.

Upon discharge from the hospital...we were given a signed script (8 1/2 x 11 sheet) with the Dr's signature and general information with the type of surgery, diagnosis code, supplies needed etc. The Ostomy nurse also had an itemized list of supplies on a sheet we faxed with the Dr's orders. Granted in the beginning it was for Hollister which the hospital used on him. After trying those for awhile he had a reaction, tried another brand and finally on the 3rd one he found success.

When you know if you need flat or convex wafers call the 3 big companies for samples so you can try different ones.

Edgepark took care of whatever needed to be done when we were changing around different supplies as it is quite common in the beginning to do this.

My surgery is on the 30th. Tattooed as the pen mark wouldn't stay on that long :).

The bag you use in the hospital won't be what you use, just so you know. They put a clear bag on you, so they can see, but you don't have to use that. Your ostomy nurse can help you with all the supplies and what might be best. Like I said before, they will probably give you a huge list, you won't use most of those things!
Also be aware that the first output you have will probably be swamp green and smell like a dead skunk, lol. Don't worry it won't stay that way! That's just the bile coming out, once you start eating it will change. I did not know that and was so upset when I saw my output and thought I had to live with that forever,lol.
Did yall get real tattoos? Like with needles and ink?

I think mine is "real" - I don't know how long it would last "out in the wild" though, haha. I had three pinpricks.

I'm pretty sure mine would stay if they didn't cut it off. . . lol. Summerstorm they told they'd use clear bags at the hospital when I met with my nurse yesterday. And I also know I WILL change to opaque. I don't think I could handle it very long otherwise. Looking forward to feeling better :) Today has been an interesting day. I think in one way my colon is trying to behave, and then I hurt in other places that don't normally bother me. It will all be gone in three days! I shall EVICT my colon, and live a better and normal life. Already planning a trip to DC in the spring. This isn't going to run nor ruin my life anymore.

ActiveUCer, where are you from? When is your surgery scheduled?

No problem. I'm from Ohio (surgery is being done at the Cleveland Clinic - not sure if that info is in this thread or not). I've written about my experience so far on activeguts.wordpress.com.

I haven't updated since my consult visit and I haven't updated about the why's I chose surgery, but I will soon.

You got a tattoo? They just sent me home with a Sharpie and told me to colour it in every couple days :)

Hahaha, that made me laugh a bit more than it should have for some reason. I don't know if it's picturing myself standing there coloring it in each day or what. And I can just see a serious in-depth discussion at some point about the best pre-op marking procedures and patient adherence.

It's good they gave you the marker!

After all of my artistic efforts, they didn't use the spot anyway. When they did my bowel resection they said a temp colostomy was a possibility. I didn't get the colostomy but had to have emergency surgery a week later, which resulted in a temp ileostomy. Surgeon had to fly by the seat of his pants and figure out where to put it all on his own tongue

I didn't get a tattoo -- just an X w/a piece of tegaderm over it.... it lasted for the week or so.

Regarding the enemas -- they are the last ones you'll ever have! No colonoscopies either.... I kept that in mind when I had to do them pre surgery, and it was no big deal, almost exciting thinking about all the invasive things I'd never have to do again.

I have to say I'll be glad when this is over. Had a really bad night last night. Laid on the couch in agony, this morning was in the bathroom, and it's starting again. ICK!
