My surgeon performed TWO open abdominal surgeries on me within 13 months of each other. My first surgery was to remove 10 inches of colon due to a stricture, the second was for my proctocolectomy w/perm ileostomy. My surgeon told me that he only does open surgery as he wants to be able to see & feel what he is doing. Made perfect sense to me. Had I known that my colon was in such terrible shape on the other side of the stricture, I would have had it all done the first time.
I got along very well with both surgeries. First surgery, I was completely off pain meds in one week. The second surgery was more involved with the removal of colon, rectum, anus & constructing the stoma, so they recommended that I stay on the pain meds longer. Not so sure I really needed to do that, but I did. Then, I developed post-surgical ileus and ended up back in the hospital a week after dismissal. I think the pain meds contributed and I did not walk nearly as much as I did after the first surgery. So, remember to WALK as soon as you can and as much as you can It has been 15 wonderful months since my second surgery and I have had no issues, whatsoever. I hope & pray that things will remain uneventful.
These were my first surgeries and hopefully my last, so I don't have anything to compare them to. I felt that I was not in as much pain as I anticipated. They recommended and I reluctantly [first surgery] agreed to have an epidural for 3 days post surgery. It was a blessing and for my second surgery I was more than willing to have the epidural again.
On one of my Facebook support groups a woman recently had the same surgery with the "DiVinci" machine, which I gather is a step up from Laproscopic. I believe she was under anesthesia for quite a long time. She spoke of being in a great deal of pain for much longer than I had with my open surgeries. I suppose alot has to do with individual pain tolerance.
dietcoke, I was a bit relieved to read that you chose the proctocolectomy w/perm ileostomy. With your having Crohn's Colitis [like me] it sounded way too risky to leave anything in there to chance recurrence. Best of luck to you.
