Bleeding around stoma, I need some help please.

On Saturday I started bleeding around the outer edge of my stoma. I was bleeding very badly. My husband took me to the ER and the doctor said I had  someway hit or irritated an artery.  The blood was gushing out.  The ER doctor tried to

cuterize it but that did not work.  He had to put 3 stitches in it to stop it from bleeding. He tells me to put my appliance back on but move it over to were the stitches would not get any poo on it.  We did that, but that is not working. I had to go back yesterday to the ER because it started bleeding again. Not at all like the day before but it was bleeding. While there of course it quits so there really is not anything they can do.  As of right now I am trying to do as little as I can to not irritate it and waiting on my surgeons nurse to call me and see if there is anything I can do.  Has anyone ever had any type of issue like this and please if you did, what do I do.  I'm missing work and these ER visits are adding up.  Thanks in advance for any help.

Yikes sorry I don't really know! sorry you're having to deal with this. How old is your stoma? I think you need to see your normal surgeon asap.. so just hang in there until you can get to speak to him/her. good luck and big hugs x

Thanks for your words of courage. I have an appointment tomorrow to see my surgeon. Till then I will just sit around and do as little as possible. I have had my colostomy since July 28, 2010. This is the first real problem I have had.

I wish you'd post an update from your visit with the surgeon as soon as you're able. I'm also very curious about what's causing your problem.

I am sorry I have not posted sooner. I did go to see my surgeon. He really didn't tell me to much. He just said that it can happen and that they can just keep stitching it up. He wants me to have it reversed.
I have had this for over 2 years. (July 28, 2010). Because of all the problems I had before and all I went thru before they finally decided that I had to have it, I am just scared of another surgery. I will make a long story short. I had rectal bleeding, went to ER, they did a CT. I had a mass on my colon. They told me I had cancer. Surgeon did a colon resection, path report said no cancer. 2 weeks later incision busted open with what was thought to be a wound infection, doctor said it may do this because he had operated on an unprepped colon. Anyway that ended up with a fistula. I was on TPN for 8 weeks. Nothing was working, fistula was not healing. My surgeon then sent me to another surgeon. The surgeon he sent me to took out the fistula and gave me a colostomy. I have dealt with it this long and after all I went thru I am scared to have another surgery. 60 days in the hospital total. I guess that that is what I am going to have to do. I can't deal with not knowing when it will bleed. I am afraid to go to sleep. I am afraid I will bleed to death in my sleep. I am going back to see him in a week or so he wants to do another colonoscopy and make sure everything is still ok before I make my decision. I will keep you all updated.

It's a ruff decision. I had my colectomy around the same time...July 26, 2010. The anastamosis disconnected ('suspected' 5 day leakage) which led to sepsis, ileostomy (Aug 3 2010), blood clot by my liver, pneumonia, wound bled and had to remain open...total hospitalization of 39 days. Should have been longer plus rehab, but begged to go home. It's very traumatic. I too have my ileo. I'm unsure how severe my dysmotility actually is. I'm fine otherwise, just scar tissue issues which has required hospitalizations. My surgeon is now discussing reversal and I tell him no. I don't know if I'll ever want to. I'm more concerned because I was Atypical in my intestional disease and I just don't know what the future tolls. Then on top of the post-op issues, I had to deal with neglect from the attending surgeon when my surgeon went on vacation 5 days post op. It's not easy, everyone's case is different, but I wanted you to know your not alone. I do hope that this bleeding mystery stops as suddenly as it started, so you can concentrate on what avenue to go down.
