I cannot speak for lapro, but I can tell you that I got along fine with my 2 open surgeries within 13 months of one another. I actually got along better with my first surgery and was off all pain meds in one week. For my second surgery, there was the butt wound added plus I was very, very sick going in, therefore, in much more weakened condition prior to my second surgery. My surgeon recommended staying on the pain meds 2 weeks, which I did and ended up back in the hospital with post-surgical ileus. I wish I had gone off the pain meds in a week like the first time. We will never know for sure, but I think the pain meds contributed to the ileus.
My surgeon does not do lapro. He said he likes to be able to see and feel what he is doing. I could identify with his reasoning and was fine with open.
On the other hand. An IBD support group friend had the same dx & issues and the same surgery that I had using the state-of-the-art DiVinci machine. From what I gather, it is a step up from lapro. Not only was she under anesthesia for a way longer time than I was for open. She complained of being in so much more pain than I ever felt I had with my open surgeries. She remained on pain meds for a good month after her surgery.
While in the hospital you will most likely be offered the epidural which remains in place for 3 days. I wasn't too keen on it for the first surgery, but caved and said, "okay." Telling my surgeon that I wanted an epidural again was the first thing I told him at my pre-op visit for my second surgery
