Blah... Hubby has a hole in his JPouch

So, we had a pouch X-ray and our surgeon looked at the film and there is like a one inch hole in hubby's pouch. He is back right now getting a pouch-o-gram just so he can see the rest of the pouch and irrigate the hole.

So, he said it will be another couple months now before we can talk about takedown. I hope my husband can live with his ileostomy a bit longer. He absolutely hates his stoma and said he would not be able to live if it was permanent. He is in good spirits still but I'm sure he will be sad by this.

He still has mostly liquid output ... Limotil isn't really working. And hubby is back to being difficult again. I talked to his surgeon right in front of him and he was like I can't help you if you won't listen to your wife... Lol.

The only thing I think is working are these electrolyte pills I bought. He takes them a lot and it had boosted his energy and keeps away the dizziness.

I told his doc about the output and the pills not working... So I dunno if there is anything else we can give him.

I'm thankful we are waiting to make sure his pouch is perfect, but this whole thing is so trying on the soul.

Because his staples came loose in that spot. It's probably how he got sepsis after his initial surgery. I asked if it should have already closed up but he was on steroids for a month after his surgery in October, so his healing has probably slowed.

So, we have to check it again in two months. He said if it doesn't heal on its own he might have to do a procedure to close it up that he has done on other people.

better a "mechanical" hole like that than holes that create out of nowhere for unknown reasons.

My doctor has me on Lomotil and Imodium. I'm a month out from my JPouch creation and don't have a takedown date yet. When he told me to add imodium to lomotil, I double checked and said "I didn't know I could take both of at basically the same time." And he said yes I can and to do so.

Thanks, yea he mentioned that to us today as well.  To take both of them... but they never much really helped.

We are kind of perplexed though... cause on the way home he was complaining that he felt like things were just coming out of his butt.  He went to the bathroom and his sphincter is actually just wide open.  Is that normal after a pouchogram?  The mucus is just freely coming out of his bum and I'm sort of worried cause the doctor didn't say anything about his a-hole just being open season... should we call the doctor?  Hubby is stubborn and says its fine its fine, it will go back to normal... but I'm always the worry wort.

Awe, I just looked at his bum and he is like all bruised and purple... did his doc violate him or what?!? :(

Just a quick note on his output.....between my jpouch surgery and the takedown surgery my output was always liquid. It did not get thick at all like it did before when i just had my end ileo . The reason is with a loop ileo there is that much less small intestine available for things to thicken up.
The stoma is located further up the chain so to speak so it's closer to coming out of your stomach so naturally it will be more liquidy.
I wouldn't stress about it. As long as you stay hydrated it shouldn't even be a concern.

This is normal after a pouchogram. I am surprised the technician did not warn him it could happen. It should go back to normal in a couple of hours. What is coming out is not mucus but liquid from the procedure. If it does not stop, he is in pain or there is any blood then call the doctor. All of this should have been in his release paperwork. I found a hot bath closed things up.

He has gone through so much. Luckily, it is a problem with a clear solution.

Thanks Kazy! It had been a big problem from October - November and then he ended up in the ER for severe dehydration... but it seems that cutting as much sugar from his diet as possible has now slowed stuff down moderately and he is taking these great electrolyte pills now that are like a Godsend for us. Since he absolutely couldn't stand the powder that we put into water, the pills are great. Even from just taking one pill he can feel the difference.

And thanks Subzero, I'm glad to hear its normal. And I misspoke slightly... he had a pouchoscopy and not a pouchogram. I believe the doctor said he used some localized anastetic on his bum and hubby said they cranked his butt open as well...so I'm guessing that's why he's all bruised and his sphincter is wide open.

He thinks its getting better... stuff isn't coming out as freely as it did before. It sucked when we drove home cause we now live like 40 miles from the doctors office and we had to sit in nasty traffic for almost 2 hours and he leaked through his pants and onto the car seat. They told us he might have some drainage and a little blood but they didn't bother to say "oh by the way, his exit is wide open, caution" :)

Yea, we have been through a lot... I feel for people like Bootstrap and send her my best wishes...but it makes me so worried when I read her story and just cross our fingers that we get all this stuff worked out before his takedown.

Argh!  Sorry you and your hubby are having a setback.  Like you said, it's better to wait to make sure the pouch is in top condition before the takedown.  Frustrating nonetheless.  Take care.
