Friar's swab sticks

Someone out there in ostomy land found Friar's on swab sticks. I lost the website. Please post the site.

They seem to be the same as my Friars in the bottle. I have used them a couple times with great results. Just as sticky!

I can get it from Well.ca since I am in Canada. These swabs came from the states.

Friar's that only comes off with alcohol is the right stuff. Do you have it? Bottle or swab sticks?

No, the kind I bought last month was the wrong stuff, thats why I was wondering if the swab stick kind was the water proof kind before I ordered it. i find it kind of strange that there are 2 different types to begin with. Is it just because they are from different manufacturers?

Rougier makes both in bottles. I guess the non waterproof has some uses. I have not tried the swab sticks. I have a good supply in bottles.

I have a question... what is Friars and what do Ostomates (did I spell that right?) use it for?

Friar's Balsam Compound Benzoin Tincture is a first aid product. I apply it around my stoma with a q-tip. It is waterproof and dries sticky. When removing the wafer there is no residue left on the skin. I have been using it for about 3 years without any leaks. It helps to heal open skin. I use no powders or skin barriers. It is only available online.

Ok, maybe I'm just dense, but how do you know which one is the wterproof T O B, and which ones aren't, and why can't the Canadian pharmacys ship to the states? I really want to try the waterproof type, but I really can't do the trial and error thing until I find the right type. Could someone maybe post a picture of the bottle or something?

The waterproof type cannot be washed off with soap and water. It takes alcohol to get it off. nenagirl at the top of this thread posted a pharmacy for swab sticks. I have no idea why the Canadian pharmacies cannot ship to the US. I have e-mailed and called and cannot get an answer. How far is Canada from you?

Larasmom and nenagirl?   Is this the only breakdown of ingredients listed on the swab package?

One swab stick saturated with compound Benzoin Tincture, U.S.P., 10%. Containing 77% alcohol.

 

I wonder what makes up the other 13%

Dan's ingredient list for the bottled Friar's is more detailed, but does not give the alcohol percentage.

The active ingredients in Friars are Benzoin 10g, aloe 2g, storax 8g, tolu balsam 4g in each 100 ml. Inactive ingredient is ethyl alcohol.

ChronieCJ, that is the only ingredients listed on the swabs. Not sure what the other ingredients would be..... I find them very handy for traveling and for my emergency kits.

I ordered some of the swabs.   I have good luck with powders and barrier spray, but if the swabs would work, I could cut out the use of those and save some money.

CrohnieCJ, other than what has been already posted/listed on the box of swabsticks for ingredients, I did find this from Wikipedia:

Snippet:
Tincture of benzoin is a pungent solution of benzoin resin in alcohol. A similar preparation called Friar's Balsam or Compound Benzoin Tincture (USP) contains, in addition, Cape aloes and storax (liquidambar resin).

One more question about Friars...
I see they have alcohol. I would think that means they are NOT "no sting" when put on raw irritated skin. Am I wrong? some of my "no sting" stuff stings. :(

It does burn a little if you have some irritation but it actually helps healing. It's a first aid product. It's all I use when I do my change. No paste, powder or anything.

It's been a wonderful find for me!!!
