still very new to this, having leakage issues

I have been living with my ileostomy for three weeks now, home from hospital after one. I have had amazing support from a nurse that is visiting for the first few weeks and bag changes. I have been using a Hollister two piece system but am having many leakage issues. My skin is very irritated right now and I am having trouble clearing up the red sore skin. At first I was not using any other products (paste, spray, shields) but have started experimenting to see if I can find a solution to the leakage. Today I have applied a coloplast system to see if it works better with a moldable barrier ring. My stoma has been called a textbook stoma by several nurses so I am thankful for that. Does anyone have any tips to make the leakage stop so my skin can heal?

When I had the "textbook" stoma, I had lots of leakages with the hollister system the hospital gave me.
But I was told by my stoma nurse that they were "middle of the road" because that was the only ones that the hospital would buy. I've used other hollisters, convatec, and coloplast systems with no problem.

You can get free samples from all of them to see what works before you actually order/pay for them.

Now I problem loop stoma and all the ones that worked with my textbook case don't work with the loop. But my loop is NOT textbook at all.

hello sorry to hear that. i use a one piece so cannot comment. if your stoma sticks out just a little then you may need convex flange. ensure the fit is snug around stoma. you may need to use eakin or adapt seals also which are easy to just stick on and less messy than paste, which has to set for a bit before you apply the bag. all i can say is use a different appliance. if you go for a one piece coloplast is very popular. your stoma nurse should really be helping you with the skin soreness. the powder shoudl help

I wear the two piecs. hollister is a good brand but very hard on skin. I would try Convac Tac.  once you find what work best stay with that brand. I had ractun cancer. 2 yrs ago. I would use Reliamed Adhesive remover wipes

I am so sorry that you are having skin issues AND leakage problems. I know firsthand that either one of those alone can make life with an ostomy pretty miserable.

Your body has/is going through major changes and your patience will definitely be tested.
You might want to consider using a convexed pouching system, even though you have a text book stoma. It certainly won't hurt anything and it may be the extra help you need until all of the swelling in your abdomen goes down.
ALso, if you use any skin barrier wipes, make sure they are NO STING. The last thing you need on irritated skin is alcohol or any other irritant.

I completely understand what you are going through right now because I also had major leakage for the first 2 months which irritated me skin horribly! I went through 10+ pouches a day. But once a WOC nurse put a convex pouch on me, I swear I heard angels sing! lol Life suddenly became good. =)

I have asked for samples from several companies and am waiting for them to arrive. I find the coloplast more comfortable and most likely will end up switching to another appliance. Too bad my supply of appliances is Hollister if i do change.

You may need convexity to help. My husband also started out with Hollister and then Convatech and his skin does not tolerate the outer adhesives. The Coloplast Sensura one piece with convexity has proven for the past year 1/2 to be the "right fit" for him. His skin is in very good shape with this appliance.

He does not need to use an inner seal/ring as he did with the others.

The only thing he uses after he dries the area well is spray on the Smith and Nephew Skin Barrier spray...dries that and then applies the convex wafer.
