Pregnant with ilieostomy and considering the midwife route? Anyone else tried this?

I am 13 and a half weeks with our first baby...seen an OB a couple of times and everything looks good so far.  I am really interested in using a midwife, but msot everyone says it's a bad idea because of my situation.  Has anyone else on here been pregnant and used a midwife?

Congratulations on your pregnancy. What wonderful news! I have absolutely no advice as I had my children long before I had an ileo but I just wanted to wish you well! Sarah

Hi Happy - I would ask why you want a midwife? Is it the lack of invasiveness? More natural approach? I'm only asking because maybe you can get the best of both worlds - a midwife as the primary caretaker at a hospital with an obstetrics staff or something similar. You work with the midwife to create a birth plan and the midwife can be an advocate for trying to follow your wishes (i.e. if you want a natural birth, then the midwife wouldn't let them give you Petocin (sp.)).

I've never been pregnant, but I would consider a birth with an ileo a more complicated situation requireing monitoring by a OB/Gyn (not necessarily more risky to the baby, but maybe to you). But that doesn't mean you can't balance both.

Congratulations on your wonderful news! What does your OB/GYN and gastroenterologist advise?
This is an extremely personal decision but I would support having a midwife as the primary care taker at a local hospital that welcomes such arrangements. I would think of this as the best of both worlds. A friends daughter did this before Christmas and it was wonderful. She was in labor for three days and then the placenta did not detach. The hospital staff were not involved at all until it became an emergency. If she had not already been in the hospital, it would have been a close call. Both she and her beautiful son are doing very well.

Have to agree w/the others here.... if you start getting a blockage that won't clear or something you'll need fluids and want to be close by gi help..... if you can set up so you have a midwife if all goes well, and access to doctors if it doesn't, that sounds ideal.

I agree with everyone else. And, I'm sure you have heard how much labor hurts, and it really does, so you may want the option to have the drugs when it gets bad. I'm not saying that to scare you of course!
Lots of things can go wrong, ileo or no ileo and being in a hospital is always safest. I know a lot of hospitals do allow midwives in the room, when I had my son there was one in with another lady.

Thanks, Everyone! To answer some questions...my OB office is of course against using a midwife, but not because of my ileostomy....they are just against it in general because they have heard "horror stories". I just thought to myself that there are horror stories in hospitals as well. But yes, I did want to use a midwife because I like the more natural approach, but at the same time am starting to feel that it may not be the wisest thing at this point, especially since this is my first baby. I hadn't thought of the possibility of blockage during the birth, but that is definitely a concern. I also still have a lot of rectal bleeding, so it has crossed my mind that hemmorhage may occur from all the pushing?

If you are having a lot of rectal bleeding I would stick with the OB. I tore bigtime with my first vaginal delivery - it was an absolute nightmare and the recovery was terrible because I was also caring for a newborn. After that I had two c-sections and they were a breeze compared to the first delivery. My case was rare but I will tell you that when you have any kind of injury "down there" it's not fun. Good luck!
