OT: scared my OB

I think I weirded out my OB a bit. In mid-December I had Essure implants placed because we don't want any additional children. On Tuesday, about an hour after my run, I started having really bad abdominal pain. I automatically assumed partial obstruction and set about drinking tea, walking, hot bath, etc. The pain lessened to where I could tolerate it but, it then isolated in my lower right abdomen/pelvis. I know with obstructions you kind of hurt all over so I was confused. Then I got to thinking about the implants and I called for an appointment with my OB.

I went in yesterday and she did an exam followed by ultrasound. The u/s showed my right ovary is the size of a lime (versus roughly the size of a peanut M&M like it should be). It's "suspicious looking" according to my doctor. I've seen cysts on u/s before and they usually look black but this was a big gray, misshapen mess. She took blood to run a "tumor marker panel" and I have an MRI on Monday.

I think I freaked her out because, as she was standing there telling me all of this, I just busted out laughing. I don't think that was the reaction she was expecting but, that's what happened. She asked if I was ok and I tried to assure her I was. I mean seriously, this is really happening? Even if this is something benign, they will likely have to take it out because it is so large not to mention painful. I just don't want to deal with any of it with more doctors, tests, possible surgery. Pretty sure I'm out of my head at this point. :-/

Please don't worry too much if your tumour marker comes back elevated. My doctor did this blood test on me because she was worried about my ovaries. My levels came back very elevated and I stressed out for three months until I was able to have surgery. I had a bowel resection to remove endometriosis from my bowel/rectum and they also cleaned up endo from other areas of my pelvis. When they got in there, my ovaries were completely normal. What they saw on the ultrasound was actually on my fallopian tube, which they removed.

There are a lot of false positives with the tumour marker test. False positives can be caused not only by endometriosis, but also by irritations in your bowel. In my case I had both of these things. Had I known this before the test I wouldn't have agreed to have it because it caused unnecessary stress.

My ovaries were the size of limes before they were removed. Apparently, the toxins from a perforated large intestine can cause all sorts of strange things to happen. The ovaries and falliopian tubes were removed. No more pain from that at least! Surgeon refused to do the marker test saying there were too many false positives. Nothing proved to be malignant but I was very happy to be pain free.

So sorry. Really hope it isn't cancer, and that if it is, it's caught early. I can totally understand your initial laughing, REALLY?????, response. Just one thing after another.....
