Hi guys,
I'm just wondering how common it is to have pain with sex after having ostomy surgery. Please reply whether it has happened for you or not...if it has, does it eventually go away?

Yes, it can be normal to have painful sex after the surgery. I had no problems until after the reversal. My first ob/gyn exam was hell. I could hardly walk for a couple of days. I was told the more you practice the more enjoyable it becomes. Definitely use a lubricant. If it isn't better after three months, there is a dilation therapy that helps.

I've been to the Gyno, and that's more or less the same, but haven't had sex since the surg. My surgery was 2 years ago, so I'm definitely healed, but I'm mostly worried about the butt wound creating adhesions or something.

I have not had any butt pain issues with sex. Have you asked your gyno about this? I confess I have not experimented with many positions yet. Do you have a regular partner who will be understanding and gentle about this? I confess I took a valium the first time because I was pretty scared.

I haven't dated much since the surgery. Just getting back into the scene and just want to know what I'm in for, that's all. I obviously wouldn't sleep with someone if I wasn't sure they would be understanding about it.

It depends what kind of surgery. If you are having your rectum removed, it can cause your anatomy to shift. This can be very problematic for some of us.
But if you are just getting a jpouch, probably not. As with a jpouch there is still something there to "hold up" your lady parts!

Of course anything can hurt after any surgery - mostly because of inflammation and healing. So you have to be sure to follow your surgeon's advice regarding when you are allowed to return to things.

I know things have shifted but I haven't experienced any pain...actually it's way better then when all the diseased parts were there blush

My butt wound was an issue for the first year (abscesses) but it's been more then 4 years since that has healed and no issues with it now.

I had my whole colon removed... anus sewn shut. Things have tilted a bit for me without a colon, but nothing drastic. My favorite positions have changed a bit due to this, but none are painful. I am better off after surgery as sex was painful with my inflamed colon.

Well, I don't have a bag, I was reconnected immediately, BUT I do find that when my husband wants me on top, I am very conscientious about leaking on him.. I find that even a year out from surgery, I still leak slightly when I squat down, or move my bottom in certain ways... Thank god my husband is understanding, but sometimes I am uncomfortable with his "if you leak, no big deal, we just go finish in the shower together" attitude...

I had sex once in between my two surgeries, while I had the ileostomy... (two rounds, one occasion, missionary position). I had no pain at all - everything functioned perfectly normally. It was even better since I was healthy and had energy and sex drive back.

I have not tried it yet since my takedown, but I imagine it will be the same.
