So, think of it that way Rose, would you want someone who is new in town to get you to the airport on time in a traffic jam?? Or this guy who knows 100 different ways around the gut to get you there in 1 piece and on time?

I actually use the taxi driver analogy for my students. Some of them have learned math as here is one way to do this, here is one way to do that, etc.... and I want them to be more like taxi drivers than people who are new in town....

But it fits for a lot of other things too, and I'm glad you liked it.

I have gaiened 10 lbs in the past week and my ankle edema is not going down at night any more. I am not sure what to do. This is not normal. Rosemary

Ahhh good! Just did. He will be back in tomorrow and will call me back. Figures he would be out til tomorrow. But this just happened! If they know their stuff i may have to move closer! RJ

Dr. R's. NP said my locals need to deal with this as he has done nothing surgical to me yet. The gi secreatary on other hand took detailed message and will have GI doc call me tomorrow. I hope he does not just refer me off to locals as mu locals are clueless. RJ

Rosemary, so glad to see you put weight on!!! YEAH!!!! Keep up the good work :)
As for the edema, well, take that one day at a time.. are you finding it easier now to move around? More energetic?? I hope so... I know you have been trying your best to keep moving, so I hope it only gets better :)

Sorry to hear you are still battling Rosemary, but after reading all the posts on this thread, it certainly sounds as though you are at the right place with the right Dr!! Dr R sounds amazing!! I think you should go with all the advice you have been given and put your trust in him to sort you out. As for the pedal oedema (oedema of the feet), could this not be attributed to the extra salt intake you are taking? Try cut back a little on the salt and elevate your feet at night and it should start to decrease. It's tricky, too little salt and you dehydrate but too much and you retain too much fluid - it's a fine balance. All the best with all your decisions ahead, I am sure you are on the right track!!

Rosemary, I had an idea for you. I love oranges and grapefruits. Well, you know how we can't eat them because they can't digest. Well, I chew them and suck the juice out but then spit the meat out. And I have a friend who does food that way. He chews the juice out of the food but doesn't swallow the food. He does this to control weight though!!! LOL

Maybe you can try this to satisfy chewing and your body can get more nutrients.

Just an idea I had.

That sounds good. I would like to chew on a pizza right about now!
I did get some chocolate chip ice cream and cew on the chips and that was satisfying. All went thru ok. But nothing that doesn't dissolve will get out of that stoma.

Weird thing it passed this thick metamucil contrast at beth israel hospital. How the heck did it do it if something normal like yogurt or a cracker won't go thru. AuUgh!

Have been given antibiotics for small intestinal bacterial overgrowth but they gave me bad liquidy output like down to bile. So i had to stop. But then i get really liquidy output without them too but not as ongoing.

Someone has got to sort this. Love the chew and spit ideas! RJ

Hi Rosemary - Did you call the GI's office about the output? Did they tell you to stop? You shouldn't stop it own your own. Weird output is different, but it doesn't seem dangerous.

It just goes back to letting the Dr.'s take care of you instead of trying to figure it on your own. The Dr.'s are listening to you.

Yes i called. He said it was fine to stop the antibiotic if the diarrhea was that severe that i was down to bile. He said you may still get some from the small bowel bacterial overgrowth tho. And i did but was not keeping me house bound like the antibiotic diarrhea.

So i will have to ask what do we do about the small intestine bacterial overgrowth? That supposedly keeps you from absorbing nutrients and makes for burping, bad breath, and all that bloat even with liquid intake passing.

Yep this place is very responsive. I just really think that my guts are just honestly too scarred in to ever have a stoma work on either side. But all i can do is hope! What i really need is a cure for scar tissue that does not exist.

Maybe you might want to take a look at this , I have been given the drug Celebrex to take for inflamation but when checking out the side effects on Wikipedia It has an article at the bottom of drug information about how it helps with adhesions after surgery ? Apparently patients given it for just ten days after surgery had some good results .

How about a probiotic for the bacteria? I know you're not comfortable with stuff like yogurt for fear it will back up, but when I can't have my beloved yogurt (like now while I'm in Asia), I'm taking a small bottle of Yakult probiotic drink. So far, no bacteria seem to have invaded my stomach, and given I've been in some rural parts of China, that's saying something.

I will ask about the celebrex i know they took it of the market and my first stoma doc said it can actually. Cause bleeding after surgery. As it is like a powerful nsaid but i will ask here. There is also sutent that was tried by dr puder at childrens' in boston which is an Anti cancer drug that he tried in rabbits to prevent adhesions. But no luck in larger animals.

I asked about the probiotic and was told not so effective in small intestinal bacterial over growth but xifaxin is the antibiotic of choice but woundn't you always have to be on it?

Tomorrow i am having an ileoscopy and the gi doc here at CC is going to see if it is the type of stoma stricture that can be dilated. Or if definitely the surgical stricture type.

I will make. A list of all these ideas tho as why not!

Xifaxan is the antibiotic of choice for SIBO as far as I know. You don't necessarily need to be on it forever, the idea is that having bacterial overgrowth is a positive feedback loop, having too much bacteria lets the bacteria continue reproducing and being overactive in your gut... if you can wipe out the overpopulation with a course of Xifaxan and sort of "reset" to "normal" microbiota then the SIBO won't recur unless you have an ongoing issue causing the overgrowth (e.g. backwash ileitis... but without a colon you're good there :)) Anyway that's my understanding. Either way Xifaxan is barely absorbed systemically so it's one of the safest for longterm use.
