Had an appointment with my surgeon this past friday (i go to MUSC in charleston, i think its a great hospital) and she has scheduled a barium enema on the 19th and if all looks good reversal on April 29th. I just had the surgery on March 11th. is it too soon? she would no obviously...just not to sure how i feel about it already. Going to my job here shortly to talk about more leave. i was scheduled to go back to work april 26th....my birthday.

Dgtracy, that's awesome. You must be like Superman. Jokes aside, I'm sure your doc knows best. It seems like I've been waiting forever. I had my barium enema last week an have my final consult before surgery on Friday.

Wow, what a fast healer you must be! I have no idea about whether is is too soon for a reversal, since I chose to go with and end ileostomy. I did just have my surgery back on 3/13, 2 days after you, and am not even supposed to go back to work until the first week of May. Also, I would've had to do 3 surgeries had I gone with the J Pouch, likely with a good bit of time in between...but, all of this is because I was VERY sick, malnourished, underweight and weak and the time of surgery.

I guess what I'm saying is that I'm no help at all! I'm sure your doctor wouldn't do it if they didn't think you were ready though. Good luck!!

Wow, that's really fast! Is that like the average length of time between the big surgery and the takedown? Or is it just a special case for you?

I live in Asia now but over here, they do takedowns between 3-6 months after the initial big surgery (total colectomy). I got approved 5 months post-op.

Dgtracy- The barium enema is not the most pleasant experience. The best way to go about it is try not to think about it to much. They basically look for leaks to make sure you're ready to be reattached. Don't do the bowel prep if the staff tell you to. Talk to your suregon if they request it.

No, that is not fast. Some have had their reversals within days or a couple of weeks. My surgeon plans his six weeks out. And remember a lot of people have a one step surgery and are fine. There really is no set time, it just appears that most surgeons wait 3 months. If you pass your scan, and your surgeon feels you're ready, go ahead!

THanks all, and thank you Suebear..at times I break down and cry having this ileostomy. idk why it just happens from time to time. I'm hoping that the J-pouch is the right way to go and it seems like it. just nervous mostly. dont like being in the hospital but also want to get all this over with.

I always heard 2-3 months but Sue knows best.

Great news and best of luck in the upcoming weeks! And, no it's not too soon, every case is individual.
