Back in the hospital....

Woke up this am with cramping that put me into tears. Tylenol helped the pain and I stayed on the couch all day,however as the day went on, I began feeling feverish and could not get warm. Cramping slowly started again. Surgeon's office sent me to the ER. They did a CTscan and they saw two small abscesses (less than 2 cm each). My white blood cell count was up as well so now I am being admitted to go onto Iv antibiotics. They are too small drain. Things had been going so well for the past 3 weeks and now this. It sucks! Feeling quite down, but it doesn't seem like these are unusual either.

Aww bummer. I think Marianne had an abscess after her first step as well. Good that you are getting the treatment you need. Feel better soon!!

:-( so sorry to hear you're back in the hospital! I'll be keeping you in my prayers! That sucks to be doing so well and then be in the hospital!
How were your kidneys functioning??
Hope you're getting some rest in the hospital!

Yeah, I developed a huge abscess in my pelvic area two weeks after my step one. I had to have a transgluteal drain put in (thru my butt cheek in other words) and there it stayed for 6 weeks. Longest six weeks of my life! These things are not uncommon after such an extensive surgery. This too shall pass....feel better! :)

Thanks for the well wishes. Things seem to be going in the right direction here - certain markersin the blood have all gone down.

@speech - kidney functions are fine. Is there a reason for asking? Is that something that can happen with absecesses?

@Marianne - all I can say is oh my! You are a trooper! Were you in the hospital that whole time?

No, thank goodness I didn't have to stay in the hospital. They sent me home with the drain. It drained into a bag strapped to my leg and I would have to empty it every day. So gross! Glad you are on the right track....hopefully you can go home soon on oral antibiotics.

Don't be surprised if you have a scan years down the road and they are still there...I had an internal ultrasound 6 months ago and the 3 abdominal abscesses that had been drained (6 mo post op) were still there. They didn't show up on scans when the drains were removed and they aren't big or bothering me in any way...they are just there. My doctor said the body scars internally too and not just as adhesions.

Sorry, that's a drag.... I had an abscess after surgery, similar to yours in that I very quickly went from doing pretty well to feverish and very sick. Mine was in the butt wound, and my surgeon came in at 10 pm to drain it (because I was on prednisone .... she said it likely would have been an outpatient thing without the pred). I was in the hospital for 3 nights I think....

Two plus years later, the abscess was just a blip..... hope it'll be that way for you too.

Going home today! Things are looking normal, now but will still spend a week on oral antibiotics. Thanks for the support! I, too, am hoping this will be just a blip and it is over now. I was crying last night as I got so used to living with UC, that while it sucked, at least I had some idea of what to expect. This is just so new and quite the change and I have no idea what to expect! Many people have said this is not an easy surgery and I can now see why for many reasons! Trying to stay focused on the light at the end of the tunnel...

Glad that you get to go home and that you're doing well. Nothing wrong w/the crying, hope you felt better after doing it. You can't know everything about what to expect, and you certainly don't have to like that -- but know that you had an emergency, you did what you had to do, and you're better now. You can handle a lot.

Get some rest. Hope things are a lot smoother now...
