What do you all do for extreme itching? I have use tape to hold on my bags - since they never stick otherwise. Under the tape, it's pretty red so I used the skin prep - then put on cortaid itching cream which helped a lot but then it always comes back. It's usually by the adhesive so I can't cut it away... any ideas on what to do to help relieve that? I have used the stoma powder - which doesn't really work for me and I still need to get the cream.

My husband had an allergic reaction to the outer adhesive on the Hollister and Convatech wafers...he switched to Coloplast Sensura line which has no outer adhesive. We needed to clear up the rash with the stomahesive powder first and then this type of wafer helped him. He has been using this one for over 2 years now....he uses the 1" belt which gives it more support. He has not had one leak or accident (knock wood) since using this particular wafer/pouch system. He changes every Wed and Sun. We experimented recently and he went a full 9 days just to see how it went. It was fine. He still prefers to do full changes 2X a week and have the wafer off totally and shower and clean the area. This set up has worked extremely well for him and excellent skin care management so he really doesn't want to "push it".

I re-read your post....creams are generally not good even though it is to try to clear up the skin problem but affects adherance of the wafer.

I am sure I read somewhere if you do go to a dermatologist you must get it in a gel type medication which is absorbed into the skin and not leave a residue that affects adherance like creams and ointments do??????

A WOCN would probably say to use the powder and crusting method to clear up the situation...you would need to know if it is just the plain stomahesive powder or a medicated one to use depending on the diagnosis of the rash.

I have also been dealing with itchiness and hsve little red bumps. I am waiting on to see my ostomy nurses today and hoping she has some suggestions. I will let you know if she does!

Thanks so much for all the responses! I always use skin prep but I do use A LOT of tape - my doctor said he never saw anything like it before lol... because if I dont, the whole thing just comes right off. I'm going to try some of these suggestions.

Itching is the worst! I know because I itched for months before discovering the problem to be isopropyl alcohol. The problem with allergic reactions is that it is tough to clear them up to pinpoint the problem once they get bad. I had to narrow my regimen to nothing but the appliance for over a week. I did figure out the culprit, but followed up anyway with a dermatologist for patch testing.

I have been mostly rash free for almost a year, but I do have sensitivities. What is tough is not being able to use skin prep. What I do indstead is apply a very thin layer of Aquaphor skin ointment which provides a layer of protection and moisture between sin and wafer. I get a week's worth of wear time now. Good luck!!!

Since my husband uses the type of wafer with no outer adhesive as a security measure (even though he is sure he does NOT need it) he uses the 3M MEDIPORE flesh colored 1" tape across the top of the wafer and on the inside side of the wafer...just those 2 areas.

This is a very thin tape similar to a paper type tape and is VERY skin friendly.

This was suggested on a different board and we tried it and he likes it so much better than any other kind of tape.

I had the 1/4" type home for my face following some dermatology surgery near my chin area when I needed to keep it covered from the sun to minimize scarring. The tape adheres to dry skin very well.

By the roll it was $4-$5 and I bought an entire box on ebay (12 rolls) which will last a long long time and was very economical that way.

To try just a roll of it I found it at a local pharmacy supply type place...not sure if it is available in WalMart in a package. This might work well for you.
