Greeting Ostomies!

I had a recorrance of my neck/upper back injury from a car accidient and it appears that muscle relaxers don't seem to work. Everything seems to be slow release (SR) or extended release (ER) meds. Has anyone use a muscle relaxer for an injury that worked?

The doctor did prescribe a topical anesthetic patch (Lidoderm) used for shingles..but I don't think it get deep enough.

Guess this is one of the things that get tricky to adjust to with no colon.

Your GI should be able to recommend alternative medications for when you have no colon to absorb others. Muscle relaxers,I imagine, would be at the top of the list because many people have neck-shoulder-back issues.

my husband has a chronic back situation....flexerol (generic cyclobenzaprine) definitely works for him...most times he just uses 1/2 tablet when he feels it coming on to nip it in the bud...

of course that is providing it is indeed a muscle relaxer that you need

Intersting enough I got a replyfrom my GI and he has never been asked this question so I'm not sure he'll be much help!  I still have pain killer from my surgery..Tramadol. Not sure what's the difference between muscle relaxers and pain mends. They tend to do the same thing...block pain.

Cyclobenzaprine looks familiar I may have tried this one.

P&M: I have a local GI I see for perscriptions, because my GI at the hospital only has time for acute cases and I'm out of the woods. The local GI, when he can't answer my questions immediately, finds out, looks things up and one of his nurses calls me later. So there's nothing wrong with asking your doctor to go find out what muscle relaxer you can take now that you don't have a colon. I'd consider it his job, more so than telling you he "doesn't know," especially when the question is not about a msytifying situation, but a concrete one he could resolve by looking in the catalog, which he probably has software for.
Another way to find out what you can take now is to ask a pharmacist - they might be even more in touch with this kind of info.

Point of clarification...

Pain meds and muscle relaxers help in different ways. My husband (and myself) can tell when our backs are weak and ready to "give out" and fortunately it doesn't happen often but 1/2 a muscle relaxer for a day or two helps to "relax" it so it doesn't tighten up and give us worse problems that turn into sciatica. (Just those 1/2 pills make us tired though and they are only 10mg we cut in half)

I was just answering regarding muscle relaxers and the ability that your system without a colon should absorb it. I would not take them as a pain medication.
