My stoma died.

I had those horrible back and abdominal al pains in Thursday. Right when my tests comeback for my doctor to proclaim that everything is fine, I dropped the bombshell that I just realized that Stewart was purple and black. The were going to ambulance transport me tp Cleveland, but no timely ambulances were about. So the flew me via care flight. I don't remember much of the ride be amuse I was trying not through up or bein bad pain. By the time I made it two a room, the stoma was all black. The send in some blood tests and also did a stoma/intestines scope. I was supposed to have Versed before th test, but they could not get an NG tube secured. I was dry heaving horribly and trying to inset the tube was a full fledged battle. It had five inches further Togo when I ripped it out because I felt like I couldn't breath.

Then they did the scope. They found three disconcerting shaded areas that they would have to examin while I was in surgery.

Since then I've had this stupid tube constantly and feel dehydrated. I'm only allowed to eat ice chips :(. I'm so hoping that Ill be able to drink all clear liquids tomorrow with no tube! )

I have read about necrotic stomas and partial small intestine necrosis as a possible complication of an Ileostomy. It is due to not enough blood flowing into those sections. The treatment is usually removing the damaged tissues and recreating a new stoma as soon as possible. It occurs in approximately 4.3 percent of Ileostomy patients.

The good news is that the surgery is highly successful. Can they give you a sponge stick to suck on? I found that more satisfying than the ice chips. It is the same amount of liquid.

So sorry you are going through this- I remember the NG tube well for several days straight and how I was so desperate for any "nourishment" that I was prone to cheat on too many ice chips. Hope that this fixed and put behind you swiftly!

Ouch.

I hope they can explain why it happened; I would want to know. Best of luck with the operation and your new stoma!

I would have been terrified but you sound like you are managing very well. I'm glad that Subzero wrote what she did. You probably have a healthy new stoma right now. Let us know how you're doing!

Oh my goodness! I hope they've figured out what caused this and have you on the mend asap! You must have been terrified. Are any family/friends with you?

Sorry all, this fever and post surgery fun has been making me see double or triple!

The surgery ended up being a very simple surgery. It was only one hour. It turns out that there was only one necrotic area. I had a hernia develope behind my stoma. Some section of the small intestines fall into the hole, got twisted and then strangulated.

The NG tube itself hasn't been bothering me too much. Every one in awhile ill fell it in there and gag. Which the doc don't like because they are going to blame ileum. The biggest issue is that've been sooooo dehydrated. I'm sorry, but your not keeping people fom overheating ice chips when the are dehydrated. I was complaining and the nurses were telling them. One doc finally picked up on it and was trying something different and it was better. My (original) surgeon, head of crc saw me on Monday evening. I told him that I felt very dehydrated. He asked to loo at my tongue, turned to his staff and said "you are already behind the curb. She I dehydrated. Then a few minutes later he repeated the process to drive the point home

Just splitting up the post...anyway one urologist actually thinks the problem is the tube itself causing a sinus infection. I wouldn't be shocked. I've been soon crazy dizzy from dehydration that it would be hard for me tp notice. Last night I was so stuffed up that I felt I couldn't breath. And unfortunately thats where the oxygen cannula sits. The mucus and tube take up one nostril. Fortunately

So I started to breath a lot better last night. In addition, I prayed really hard and realized I wasn't having as many tube problems! I pushed out 1 liter of fluid in the ostomy and 500 ml while peeing...which means my body was functioning normally! So right now I'm sitting with my tube "capped off". None of the do toes ordered it yet, but I think this nurse felt sooo much sympathy for me! The one doc with the sinus infection story would have just yanked it then and there. But he's not in charge.

And just some additional notes, the initial insertion SUCKs. If the keep you well hydrate you won't get dry mouth too much. I sucked on sponge straws and ice chips. We would also occasionally get to have a Popsicle. Another horrible thing was when you could feel the stuff in your upper throat and it would gag you.

So sorry to hear you go through all this. I hope you get better soon. Glad to hear you are on the mend and are able to hopefully put this past you. Sending positive thoughts your way towards a quick and painless recovery.

I am sorry you have to go through that. I've had so many NG tubes and they are awful. Did they give you a numbing throat spray? When you drink the water during the insertion it is suppose to prevent the tube from going into the lungs. I've noticed that some nurses are better at it than others. The good news is that taking it out is not nearly as bad.

Stay strong these surgeries are tough. Oh and be thankful you avoided the ambulance. I've been transferred three times to Cleveland (3 hours) and it is so uncomfortable with all the bouncing!

AUC did you have any warning about that hernia? Did you know it was there? Do the doctors think that's what was causing your blockages recently?

glad to hear from you. how aweful all this happened. i don't understan why they didn't just kept you on iv fluids all the time? good to hear the stoma works good and also peeing. hang in there. i hope all will be over soon and behind you.

So glad that fixing your stoma wasn't too hard. Hope the hernia is contained too, and that the NG tube problems are over soon. hang in.

AUC i have been thinking of you. Glad it was not that huge a surgery. Hope your recovery goes well. VERY scary. SO much can happen to stoma's. Sincerely, Rosemary
