Naming my stoma...

Only 11 full days until my new life!! 

Thinking of names for my stoma - so far "stumpy" or "lump" come to mind for obvious reasons....

BUT - I imagine myself in public, speaking to my 4 year old, "Mommy needs to go take care of ______."  If I put stumpy in there do you think one may assume I have a penis?  LOL- seriously, though...

My 3 year old called it "tomato." Good luck with the naming! Maybe you should wait until you see it and then a name might just pop into mind. :-)

I love tomato - kids are amazing!!

I just found sieg (German for victory) pronounced "zeeg" my close friend is German...

I called mine PIA for pain in ass because it misbehaved so much! (I had a temp loop)

Oscar just reminded me of The Odd Couple's character - crabby, but could be coaxed into a smile. Just like a real stoma. Irritated at being brought the surface but dealing with it. lol

No offence to anyone here, I know many do name theirs, but I've never understood this practice. My arm is my arm, my head is my head, and my stoma is........er, well, it's my stoma!

Silent Lucidity - for me the decision is based on my daughter. I know that the 14 years will put me in public places where I may have to say that I need to "check my stoma" - I just would fell better having a sort of code name for it that wouldn't be obvious to those around us. Just my reasoning - I also realize that begin only 4 years old, her entire pre-K class will probably be told about it :)

I understand your reasoning. There are days when mine misbehaves and gets called some names, but they're definitely NOT for the ears of a four year old!

Having two young kids myself naming my stoma (Sheila) has made things so much easier. When the girls want to come up on me I say watch out for Sheila or I have to go take care of Sheila. In public this sounds much better than my stoma. They ask how Sheila is doing and know to respect her, think by giving her a name she takes her own persona. Kids say the grandest things, they tell other people about Sheila and people don't understand. The name came to me as I was waiting for surgery in emergency room.

I'm the same. When I was preparing for surgery and I could tell my mom was scared to death, I had her read some of the UC/surgery blogs, and it seems that all of those people name their stoma. My mom really latched onto that and thought it was soooooo funny and cute and INSISTED on naming my stoma for me and asking me "how it's doing" by its name... which just made me hate the naming convention more... Absolutely no judgment to those who do it, but having a stupid name thrust upon me by my mom just made me roll my eyes. A lot. wink

I also have a very self deprecating sense of humour, so if I were to name it, it would be something like S**t Sack or Poo Puker. Still not entirely appropriate in public!

Love Vesuvius!! I really like things to have a meaning (names) that is fitting. My daughter took 15 years to conceive and two failed pregnancies. Her name means "God heard my cry".

Keep 'em coming!

I just got mine a few weeks ago. Upon waking up from surgery while still sort of high, I announced I had a new friend and his name was "Carl." It's just sort of stuck. Haha.

My stoma's name was "crazy puppy from outer space". Crazy puppy for short.

I haven't had surgery yet but when I do, I have decided to name my stoma Flo.  It seems fitting.

I think names just kind of happen...Mine has a name, but I rarely use is. I usually end up calling 'him' a really bad 4 letter word when he acts up while changing, though!!

My daughter was 5 when I had my first ileo and she knew to pay special attention to my stomach but I really never worried about it at that age. I just excused myself to the bathroom if I needed to check on things.

Oscar the Pouch is classic. I love it.

Someone else on here called it "Gurganus" - I almost herniated my gurganus after reading that....
