Glad it went well!

I never had much butt burn, but lots of the itching! The calmoseptine works wonders for that. I have only gotten butt burn if something I ate was too spicy.

A question or explanation please
I have a colostomy with a stoma now please can some one be kind and explain to me as you all have a greater knowledge than I

What is a J Pouch construction ?
What is the loop ?
What is a take down ?
I look forward to being enlightend

Duplicate life, here is a J Pouch : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ileo-anal_pouch

The loop is for a person who's ostomy is temporary, if it's permanent one has an end rather than a loop. A loop of the bowel is pulled out onto the abdomen and held in place with an external device. The bowel is then sutured to the abdomen and two openings are created in the one stoma: one for stool and the other for mucus.

An ostomy take-down closes the stoma and the skin opening. (for reconnection to a pouch or the patient's remaining colon/rectum, etc)

Liz, I puked up more bile last night, so they still have me on ice chips only :( I've never had these issues after surgery before, and it sucks. I just begged the nurse to call and ask if I can have saltines and a coke - I'm going through caffeine withdrawal w/o my coffee and have a wicked headache.

But on the good side, my ouch is working great, no leaks, easy so far. And still no butt burn!

Sorry to hear about the puking :( My system is really sluggish waking up after surgery, sounds like that's what you're going through. As they say, no ileus lasts forever... The ileus will be over within a few days time but your awesome j-pouch is forever wink

Hang in there! Sounds like your doing great, despite the vomiting. You will feel much better after the ileus is over!

I'm four weeks out from takedown and still in to much pain. Just hope withj 6 time things will settle down. Just glad to be alive. ::

I'm just over 2 weeks out now, and mostly doing well. The butt burn is still the hardest part. The stomach spasms are much less now, and things are more solid. I actually went out back to school shopping with my daughter and mom the other day and did great. Was feeling pretty awesome, then got a call from our daycare director that my 4 year old fell from the slide and broke his arm. I stopped everything and ran, spent 5 hours at the hospital and had to use their awful rough toilet paper, so I hurt again now :( Some of you may remember that I broke my arm a week before my colectemy - now my son broke the same arm (thankfully not as badly). I feel like we bookended my surgeries with broken arms!

So sorry your little guy broke his arm! That's one thing I haven't experienced yet with my boys, no broken bones. Plenty of stitches though!

Sounds like you are doing awesome not even a month from takedown. The butt burn gets better over time. I don't get it much anymore but when I do it's a drag. I love my Calmoseptine ... Can't live without it.

The best you can do about butt burn is always rinse with water after a bm. I also carry a small bottle to fill with water in bathrooms when I'm out for the day. The dry off with tp. Then you can smear on the calmo after that, but I stopped needing it. Rinsing is enough and makes tp seem pretty ineffectual.
The foods that caused me the worst/most bb was Thai and Viet Namese, the chilis and other spices were too fresh and too strong. When you're in Asian restaurants make sure you order only the midest food.

Another tip - Psyllium husk. It binds fluid and acid into the bm, keeps it off your skin. It firms the bm and makes it glide-y. I take two tablespoons in water or yoghurt after each meal or snack and would never, ever skip it.

The bb will end soon because it gets less and less acidic over the first 2 months if I'm remembering right, but the psylium husk really works like a dream for making a firmer, easy stool.
