Ladies -- what if you have your period day of surgery?

I think you may be able to wear a pad and the hospital will provide paper knickers for you to wear during surgery. I would speak to one of the Nurses when you go in. A great question never thought about that before. The things us women have to put up with eh lol!! x

surgeons don't care whether you are with period during surgery. it's like there's enough blood already, it doesn't matter to them. i know b/c i asked more than one surgeon and more than once what if i get my period and they always say it doesn't matter to them. i know it sounds gross, but you don't even have to wear anything to keep clean. it doesn't matter to them.

I had my period a few days after my colon resection, my surgery alone kick started my period the surgeon said and so there it was, all over my bedding. Nurses were frantic until I said - oh yeah, he said by the looks of my left ovary I'd be having my period much sooner than expected. They had to use a santitary belt on me because I had so many incisions to constantly check, the two hip grenades to empty and measure, one young nurse said - I have no idea how to use these belts, I laughed with great pain and said - well you're in luck, I remember how they work. Of course maybe now they other options. But the nurses were ever so nice to me once they realized the blood was from my period and not an incision they hadn't noticed that was leaking. They all said - let us deal with the mess, when you get home, your period will be over with. And they were right. I think sometimes things like embarrass the patient far more than the nursing staff, they take it with a grain of salt and continue on.

My period came the day after surgery. Thankfully a nurse had a box of tampons and gave them to me. But - I had to remove the tampon for my cystoscopy procedure. I had my anus sewn shut, a tampon in & was hooked up to a 24 hour bladder irrigation system - had to change tampon in bed - it sucked.

Good luck Liz!!! Oh, and ask for Bentyl. The spasms didn't kick in until I got home, but they are vicious. Waiting for doc to call it in for me. And I have discovered the joys of butt burn - kind of like during colonoscopy prep.

Good luck today. I take pills continuously so I don't get my period but I would hate having that going on during surgery. I am sorry, I hope it's light so it's not a problem.

Yippee! Keep hitting the pain button tonight, and walk as much as you can. Fingers crossed for a smooth recovery.

Walk, walk, walk! And then walk some more....it helps. Hope all is going smoothly so far.....
