How do I get my bowel movements more of solids and not paste-like? It's impossible to deal with when it's like this and I have no idea what I'm doing wrong.

Do you have a stoma, pouch or all original plumbing?

If you have an ileostomy, you'll never get your BMs of a thicker consistency than eg toothpaste, and often it will be even more liquid than that. With a colostomy, your BMs will be thicker the more of your colon you have left. If your colostomy ends with the sigmoid colon, near the rectum, then yeah you should be having solid BMs at that point.

Let us know if it's an ileostomy or colostomy, and what problems you're having with the output.

Have you discussed options with your Dr. - one thing that comes to mind is a stool softener like Miralax. My 4 year old daughter takes it daily for severe constipation issues. One with liquid output from an ileostomy would take immodium - so it makes sense to me that a non-habit forming type of stool softener may be of help... Another idea is that Hollister makes a pouch lubricating deodorant & it makes the contents of your pouch kind of slide out (like rain-x for your windshield). Perhaps the combination would be a solution for you?
