i just thought of something.. as some of you maybe remember, i have a loop ileo - still have my rectum. having the rectum removed on Aug 25 and making an end ileo. they won't ask me to remove the appliance before entering the OR, will they? it seems to me removing it only after i'm asleep makes more sense, right?

a lilttle dumb, i know, it's just that it is stressing me to think i'll be with no appliance on me.. smhair

I think they'd do that while you are under anesthesia. Do they have you fasting prior to the procedure? Maybe you'd not have output if they do?

yep, surgery is 7 am and i have to fast from midnight. surgeon said no prep is needed?? but i feel more comfortable putting myself on liquids only day before surgery to have my intestine cleared.

Yes, they remove your appliance for you after you go to sleep. My operative reports all say the ileostomy is then "occluded with a piece of gauze" so it sounds like pretty much the same as what your WOCN would do if she were changing your appliance for you. Once they start actually operating the ileo would automatically stop outputting anyway (ileus).

Make sure you stay well hydrated while you're on liquids :) I was required to do liquids then fast and with my loop I got so dehydrated that they could barely get an IV in.

thanks so much Liz! kinda figured it makes sense that's how it is, but had to make sure :) it's relieving. i didn't know the intestine goes immediately into an ileus mode right as they begin. that's interesting to know!

i'm used to drink about 2 litters water a day (not including the liquid foods i'll be having), so i'd probably be well hydrated. but i think last 4 hours before going in water is not allowed too, so that makes me concerned, cuz they always have hard time finding my veins. i read how they dug your arms till asking a dr :( it has always been like that for me too and it is always a pain :/ thanks for your support! :)

Pluot is spot on with the hydration factor. I had the exact same problem pre surgery, anesthesiology had to do my IV and push the bag at top speed to get my BP stabilized. I had to do a full bowel prep though.

Also - not sure your gender (bad memory if it's been mentioned before)...
One of the best tidbits of advice I had pre-op (regarding anal closure) - a special tool to pee standing up :) That urine burns when it touches your staples, etc.

oh my gosh.... i didnt even think about the burning urine.. it makes sense, cuz the whole area will be wounded.. i'm femail!! it's going to burn like hell...... :( thanks so much MM! i'll see how i can get this thing.

I even found that I was able to use the pee ez while sitting - I used it for a full 3 weeks. Someone here told me about it & I'm so thankful for this board (in many ways).

went to the pharmacy and got something similar. it's like same idea as p ez, just has a container that is part of it. i'm totally grateful for you for informing me about this MM!! thank so so much!!!!
