I've had iron-deficiency anaemia loads of times, which at various times have required iron tranfusions and even a blood transfusion once while I was staying in hospital. My B12 was rarely tested, but was described as 'low normal' when it was (result was in the early 200s).
If you have lost your terminal ileum as a result of surgery then you will be more prone to B12 deficiency. Definitely get it tested for. Shots are generally regarded as the best way of getting B12, but if you really can't stand needles, take a sublingual (dissovable under the tongue) form of B12 instead.
