So far I have been peeling my sausage casings- I dont eat a lotof sausages but I do love some nice German sausages now and then and was wondering if we ostomates and pouchers need to be wary of sausage casings i.e. are they indigestable and bunch up in our plumbing?

Hi,yes, they could cause problems. Emphasis on could, because I've been surprised by reading reports of the kinds of things stomas will push out. But sausage casings are big, if you spread them out, and if they bunch together.Unless you cut the sausuage up into little p ieces first, I would avoid them to be on the safe side.

Yes they are indigestible. Some of us (me) eat them anyway. I can't say why I'm cautious about
some things (like salad) and reckless about
others, but there you go. I would always eat it with something (like a bun or some noodles) for a little insurance though.

The first couple months after surgery I peeled anything that had a casing. Eventually I worked up the nerve to try NOT peeling them and haven't had any trouble yet. That said, if I am eating a sausage, hot dog, etc....and the casing seems especially tough, I will spit it out and peel off the remainder, just to be safe.
On a similar note....I tried cole slaw for the first time since surgery this past weekend, and had no trouble..so I guess raw cabbage is A OK for me! What stuff do y'all find to be most troublesome?

I love sausage. I never peeled the casings but that's just me.

I didn't know you could peel sausage! I eat hot dogs though and don't peel them. It is so gross to do that! I had to do it not to long ago for my niece I almost threw up,lol.
So fat the only thing I've had trouble with is fried mozerally sticks. I don't like lettuce and carrots cause they look gross, lol.
Honestly my teeth keep me from eating a lot more than my ileo does.

It's different than hotdog casings, Probio is talking about
the real kind of sausage.

If I can't grind it to a puree I don't swallow it.

In the 2 years since his surgery, the only foods that have ever caused my husband a problem are popcorn, if eaten in large amounts without drinking enough water, and large amounts of peanuts. He eats all kinds of food, and as long as he drinks enough with his meals and chews well, he's been fine. There was the time the color of his output after a red velvet cupcake scared him to death, but that's another story...

I eat everything I'm told to be wary of, I especially eat sausages, popcorn and occasionally peanuts too. I don't really have any problems when I eat these things, apart from maybe eatiing one too many and making myself feel bloated (but thats more me being a pig)

Things with casings are specifically mentioned in the GI Soft Diet avoidance list, which I think you are past?

Thanks everyone for the good replies. I am going to keep peeling. I was indeed referring to "real" traditional sausages, not hot dogs. I agree that it woukd be a huge nuisance to peel a hot dog. Certain sausages peel very easy, but not all.

I don't eat sausages here but if I did, I would take them out of the skins.
(The best sausages, in my opinion, are not German, but Polish, Italian and French).
