Hi all, im still at the hospital. Looks like im recovering welll. There is just one thing that's bothering me, yesteday i had a weird feeling that something was developing down there where my butt scar is. So today the surgeon looked and said its skin tags. He said they desolve on their own with time. Has any of you had it? If so i'd be happy to know how it worked out. Thanks! Oh istarted to eat today. So far its going well :-)

Thanks all. Yeah looks like ill be going home on sunday. Monday tops. about the skin tags, iguess only time will tell. Wish they would go away cuz they are areal pain. And to sum it (not sure if thats the way to say it) this surgery is not as bad as i thought :-) DSZ, hopefully it goes etasy for you too.

So glad to hear that it's not as bad as you anticipated. I set my surgery date for 12/12 (my choice - best time for being off work). Were they able to do yours laparoscopically?

There was no need for laparo, cuz as i understand it, its not possible to do lapao in the pelvic? They used my bkini line incision that was made with my colectomy, and they also have to cut a bit at the front of the anus and abit at the back of it. That scar at the anus is really scaring me. I havnt even tried to look at a mirror, but it feels scary, like wierd swollen bumps. And it really hurts. Surgoen says it will go away with, but im still worried.

Don't worry. Everything looks scary right after surgery. You'll be surprised how it improves in just a few weeks.

So glad your surgery went well! I've been thinking about you and praying for you all week. Things do look and feel weird after surgery, but once things heal up, you will feel great!! :-)

Cece, B'Derech, thank you so much. I really need the reassurrance right now that things are in the right direction. It is so wierd the chicks of my bum are not separated and flexible as they used to be. I understand it can never be the same again, but will it get better? Will it feel comfortable?

Of course all the muscles are tense at the moment! Stop worrying about your butt!!! (I know, of course you're worrying about it because that's what it's been all about).
It will go back to normal.

They kind of pull the wound up in a funny way to sew it shut.... it won't be like that when your stitches/staples are out and it has healed some. It'll be closer to what it was, minus a hole.

I am not sure whether or not they were called skin tags, but I had some extra skin on the side of where my stitches had been. The surgeon burned it off with silver nitrate. It hurt a little, not bad, but got rid of the weird extra flesh.

Glad you're doing well, considering.

Hodaya, I know what you mean! I was in the same boat a year ago. The skintags are from how the surgeons stitch your butt together, I think they pull one skin flap over another. I remember mine they felt enormous and hurt!! I found some relief by sticking 2 sanitary pads on my butt cheeks on either side of the scar tissue/skintags to stop the irritation and rubbing which gave some relief. And giving your bum some "airtime" (of course in the confinements of your home), wear a nightie/long t shirt with no undies on was pure bliss - no irritation from the fabric. It last for about 2 weeks until the swelling goes down and you won't notice them anymore. I didn't know you can burn them off as blueglass's described. Mine are still there, very small and I can't see them or feel them, so I will leave them as they are now.

Thank you, Hodaya! Right now, you have swelling and stitches from the surgery, but rest assured, your butt will go back to feeling like it did, minus the hole! wink

hi all. took me a while to respond. i tried several times to write thru my cell phone while at the hosp, but each time i'd get a call and it errased my whole message, till i gave up. i'm now home (since tuesday). but it's been a very rough time for me. the pain is too much and it was hard to write. 

thank you all so much for all your responses!!! it was so very helpful and reasurring and helped me relax!!!!! lol. recovering is going as should, no complications. my only prob is i'm still in a lot of pain. pain management at home is no good and i'm planning to go to my dr tomorrow to see if he can give me something better for the pain. morphine is out of the question. they gave me day after surgery and it made my blood pressure go dangerously down. other meds are not really helping. voltaren (NSAID) is good for 12 hours, but i'm alowed only one a day. so the other half of the day i'm in horribe pain. will call my dr tomorrow morning, cuz i cant take it anymore.

cant sit yet, so it's hard for me to write much. thanks so much again everyone for your info! it was a huge help for me!!!!

I have been thinking about you, too, and am so sorry to hear that you're in pain. sad Have you tried sitting in a warm bathtub? That used to help soothe the area for me. I was a lot of pain after surgery, but it was because my butt wound got infected, so the surgeon had to put me under and clean it out. When do you see the surgeon for a follow up? I hope they can get the pain under control. I will continue to keep you in my prayers.

Cece, i tried sitting in a bath, but the bath surface is hard and hurts to sit. i read here several times about this sea wheel pillow (lol i forget how its called), but its also not so easy to sit on either. so what i do is just wash the area with water several times a day and put a lotion. it helps relax the whole area and the itching too. how awful it must have been for you to have the wound infected and go under again :( i can't imagine if i had to go thru something like that now.

about the pain meds, my family dr said it's ok for me to take the voltaren twice a day, so that gives me enough relief. the prob now is that sometimes it comes out whole thru the stoma, like yesterday, so it didn't work and i was still in a lot of pain all day :/ but anyway, i'm doing so much better now that i've "got permission" to take it twice :) i have voltaren only enough for ten more days and i hope by then the pain will ease.

i never had a problem absorbing meds in my whole 3 stoma yrs. this is something new that poped now after this surgery :/ i'll ask the surgeon if there's a liqiud voltaren. i'm seeing him on Thursday for follow up. how long till the butt stiches desolve? can't wait to get rid of them. they feel like thorns in there. is it normal that 2.5 weeks post op the pain isn't improving?

ok, now i got an update. got my period just now. dared and tried a tampon. all's good, except it's just like as you all said, the angle is different :/ but i'm thankful it's possible :)

Hodaya, since it hurts to sit in the bathtub, maybe you could get a hand held shower attachment, so you can rinse the butt wound that way. Keeping it clean is important. My dad passed away right after I had surgery, so I wasn't focused on keeping it clean, and that's why it got infected.

I don't know if Voltaren comes in a liquid form, but you could always crush a pill and put it in some applesauce or other food. Glad to hear you can take it more often. Hope your healing moves along quickly, so you can sit comfortably soon! It just takes patience.

gosh Cece, i now remember you telling me about your dad. how aweful for you and right after a huge surgery like that. my heart goes out to you for the rough time you must have had then. it was surely a big crisis for you and required a lot of stregth out of you. like you, i'm a huge beleiver, and i know faith got me thru the hardest times, as i'm sure it got you thru too back then.

yes, i'm using the hand held shower. i'm rinsing it with really low stream, cuz regular stream hurts exactly like stabbing needles. thanks for the idea, i will try to crush the pill and add it to my food :) thanks so much for your help and support! trying my best to be patient, altho i'm not so good at that ;)

Hodaya, I'm just over 8wks post op proctocolectomy with anal closure and all is well and comfortable.
I had what felt like a lumpy ridge then after about 3wks the sutures dissolved and the ridge became flat and much more comfortable. I did have a small persistent leakage (not much but enough to soil a pad). It irritated like mad and it was what eventually led me to getting a mirror down there to see what was wrong. The leakage had burned skin around The wound (basically napkin rash!) so I used a barrier cream which worked like a dream.
When I saw my surgeon at 6wks he said there were 2 very small areas of over granulation - one either end of the wound, which was where the leakage was from. He used silver nitrate on it and they both healed within 3 days.
Hope your pain resolves quickly and try to stay positive. It will heal and be ok.

Sorry to hear you're still in so much pain, Hoodaya. For the first couple months after my surgery (total proctocolectomy w/permanent ileostomy), I used a portable sitz bath for the butt wound as it was too uncomfortable/painful to get into the bath tub twice or more each day.

They are inexpensive, very easy to use and much more convenient than filling a tub or using a hand held shower. I'm not sure if they are available where you are or not, but here is a link to what I'm referring to (just copy/paste the web address into your browser):
