hollister convexity ring

hi all

New to the group and having leaking problems

I have an ileostomy and I am using a Convatec durahesive moldable convex wafer which I thought would

solve my problem which it did not,i was told to use a Hollister convex ring .my question is where my wafer is a moldable convex wafer would that be okay to use a convex ring too or would that be too much convexity for my stoma

any advice would be great.

I also wear a convatec durahesive convex but not moldable. I have no leakage trouble. What is your wafer change routine? Adhesive wipes? Soap?

Hi Dan, just got thru talking to convatec, they seem to think that the small in the moldable may have been too small, so they are going to send mediums ln the mean time I am back using what you have, also they are going to send me some seal rings to try, thanks for responding.

You didn't say what you do when you change. Powders? Soap? Washcloth? Sprays?

I clean the area around my stoma with warm water only, l make sure
I am good and dry, as far as the powder I only use it if my skin is red or feels a little irated l then apply my wafer and then the pouch. I had my surgery in Dec. 2012 and had no problem at all up until 2 weeks ago, I have not done anything
Different, so I am at a loss over this, someone had mention hollister ring with convectity under my wafer, I also have been looking at the BCIR site.it sure looks like that might be an option,

I use only water and paper towel to clean. No soap or anything else. A washcloth might have soap residue. After cleaning I dry with a hair dryer. Then I apply "tincture of benzoin". It comes on a swabstick. It is a first aid product and dries sticky. If you have any open skin it will burn for a short time. Then dry again and apply wafer. The swabs are available from www.allegromedical.com . Search product 560209. They are also available from Edgepark. The tincture is waterproof. If you get the liquid on anything it can only be removed with alcohol. I have been using it for several years without one leak!

I am having a problem with my new loop ileo as well and have started using the same wafer as you. If you are worried about having to much convexity with a convex wafer and convex ring, have you tried the hollister adapt ring or eakin ring?? That is what I have been using but will be trying the convex ring because i need a lot of convexity.

I have tried benzoin tincture but from a bottle not a swab... My skin is broken down very badly around my stoma so I find it stings A LOT!

Is that "Friar's balsam compound bennzoin tincture" made by Rougier? It is only available in Canada. Is what you have waterproof? There are other liquids that are similar but not the same. To test, put some on your arm, let it dry and try to wash it off. If it does wash off it is not the right benzoin tincture.

Yes it is the right one, I only know this because I spilled some in my sink and had to use a chemical to remove it. (I live in Canada)

So what exactly should I do when changing my ostomy to help with the leaking? I guess I could bite a pillow and rub some on lol

I agree with Tom1 :-)

A real "hurt so good" feeling when applying.  However, it only lasts for a few seconds and very well worth it.

Actually I have it in a bottle. I got it from Canada when they could/would ship it to the US. They can no longer ship to the US. I cannot find out why. If I had to use the swabs I would open the packages and squeeze the tincture into a bottle and apply with a qtip.
What should you do stop leaks? Here is my process....... remove wafer and clean with only water and paper towel. I cut a square of paper towel into four pieces. Dry with hair dryer. Apply Friar's tincture around stoma and entire wafer area. I even get it on the sides of my stoma. Dry again and apply wafer. No soap, powder, adhesive remover, etc. Yep, with open skin it will sting for a few seconds.

Dan, so using this will help protect my skin from the stool?? I don't actually get visible leaks, it's just that my new loop stoma is pointed downward so it is now impossible to put anything between my skin and the stoma opening. It is always stinging/burning out of control... I'm at my absolute whits end!

My stoma is sometimes retracted. I get seepage around my stoma but the Friar's protects my skin.

Dan, I just got the friars in the mail today, I will follow what you said to do , the only thing , I am not quite sure when I am ready to change my wafer
Is getting the friars washed off if I am only using warm water and paper towel, is that a problem getting it off before putting a new application on again, l hope I am making sense here .and does the friars serve 2 purposes....1 to protect the skin, and 2 to give the wafer better adhesion....is that correct?
I really am thankful for your help.

The Friar's will come off with the wafer. No residue. After I remove my wafer I shave with an electric beard trimmer then I clean-up. Yes, Friar's protects the skin. Yes it helps the wafer to stick.

Okay just got my samples
From convatec the first set of samples I got about 2weeks ago were the durahesive
With convexity moldable wafer size small which ended up too small and started to cut into the bottom of my stoma, so now the samples are the same but size medium , will see how this goes.will keep you posted.
