does anyone have a second, "vent" stoma?

They said it would leak "A little mucus" but it's like having a cold! I call it my snot nose. I was instructed just to keep it covered with tape and guaze, but it runs so much I have to change that about 4-5 times a day and am finding myself with wet spots on my shirt.

They have mentioned pediatric bags, but that's one more thing I have to purchase and honestly that does seem like a bit of overkill. I got one stoma cap in my starter kit and that worked ok, but a box of them is like $60 :(

Just wondered if anyone else has this and if there are any tips....

No extra stoma here but you can often find stoma caps on ebay really cheap. In fact this morning when I did my usual ebay search for coloplast products I ran across some for 6.85 for a box of 5 if I recall correctly. Hang on and I will run back thru my search and find you a link..

I have two stomas. I've never heard it referred to as a "vent stoma" though. I had one ileostomy when I had my colectomy. Then I had small bowel damage "upstream" of the stoma. They fixed it and then gave me another stoma upstream of the damage. The output comes from that second stoma. I get mucus from the original. I do bag both of them. The original stoma has about 150ml of output per day...that would be alot of bandage changes! Sometimes some fluid doesn't make it out the higher up stoma and makes it down to the lower/first stoma. I had 150 at one time the other day - just a heads up on that. I'm not sure how your stomas are arranged, but that could happen.

Vent stoma is what the backup surgeon called it when he removed my drain. *shrug* Mine is really flat and the hole is really tiny. It's above my "real" stoma. They said it was to vent the end of my (healthy) colon. All of my damage is in my small bowel. I don't think i get that much drainage to need another bag to deal with, although a ped bag was suggested by a couple people. I am trying some different kinds of gauze pads, hoping that something a bit more absorbant might help. My surgeon also suggest cutting down maxi pads and taping to it. That idea has merit as well!

I wish I knew more about the terminalogy as related to my surgery. Everyone seems to know the technical terms for their issues. Me, I can only say the cut off a bit of my small bowel and a bit of my large bowel and removed the illium in between. The small bowel has my ostomy bag and the colon has the weird little snotty nose. I am supposed to get put back together in a few months, but I don't know the name of that either.

Sounds like you have what is known as a Double Barrel Ostomy which is a type of temporary ostomy.

www.ostomates.org/ostomies.html#temp there are two stomas but they are completely separated (ie the bowel is cut completely in half). Both the functional and non-functional stomas are bought through the abdominal wall. The second stoma, as per the loop ostomy, secretes mucous and you can quite often get away with just a piece of gauze covering it rather than a bag (although of course, a bag must be worn over the main stoma).

Ahh, your is connected to your colon. I don't think it's quite as "juicy" in there!

Shaz, I'd say that's it exactly, and I am glad to have a name for it!

Activeucer: not as juicey as to need a bag, but pretty juicy! kind of like having a cold. I need to change the gauze pad about 2-3 times a day. My skin is pretty raw from all the tape removal. I just got some tape for sensitive skin so hopefuly that will help

Shaz, that page is sort of right. My main stoma is on the bottom (right about equal to wear I wear my pants, ugh!) and then the vent stoma is just about 1.5 inches above it on the same side. The drawing shows them horizontal up higher

Try mepilex bandages. They are sooo nice to the skin! I use them for my surgical wound. I order them through the same company as I order my ostomy supplies.
