I wanted to say thank you for those who responded to my plea for ideas to address my son's adhesive allergies.

I wanted to share what we have to found to help in case there are others out there with similar issues.

We are now using DuoDerm Extra think Cgi dressing directly on the peristomal skin. This dressing is silicone based. Then I attach the base plate of the ostomy bag to the dressing. The dressing acts as a second skin. So far this is working. He has no complaints of itching or irritation.

We have also used the NuHope non adhesive system. I can see the possibilities in that system. There needs to be a few tweaks but we think it could be a possibility in the future. It's not perfect in all situations but it does give his peristomal skin a break.

Hi Glad you've managed to find a solution I remember using this when I had burnt skin around my temp stoma I had 4 years ago it is brilliant stuff. Apparently the hospitals use it on burn patients as it heals the skin lets hope your son gets relief now x

My husband is having a very hard time with the skin around his stoma. He is reacting to the adhesive (we think). During our last doctor visit a nurse gave us some DuoDerm. But I have no idea how to use it. It sounds like Ostomy Mom had some success with it.

He is using the Convatec Moldable appliance with stoma paste. The skin is the worst under the taped area. His appliance is staying in place for a couple of days...maybe 4 or 5 if we are lucky.

Help in our area is pretty slim. We have had some advice, frequently the advice is contradictory. There are so many products it is hard to know what to try next. The surgeon says we need to get the skin cleaned up before any conversation about a reversal surgery.

I figured that this group has more knowledge and, from what I have read, is willing to share. Thank you for any help or advice.

Two days isn't terrible wear time. It's better to change after 2-3 days and make sure there's no leakage than try to stretch to four or five.

You may want to swap out a barrier ring (Convatec's barrier ring is called an Eakin Seal, very popular around here) instead of stoma paste -- stoma paste contains alcohol which can sting and irritate sensitive skin.

Have you tried a barrier wipe like Smith and Nephew or 3M? It's a disposable wipe that you apply to clean skin before the rest of your appliance/paste/etc, it forms a very thin film on top of the skin that can be protective if your skin is sensitive. They also come in spray form. Make sure if you do use one of these wipes/sprays that you let it dry completely on the skin before continuing your application.

Thanks for the tip, I'm going to see if my insurance will cover it so I can try it too! Have been using fungal powder, then Cavillon wipes. The area almost heals, then the rash breaks out again. Have used Benzoin Tincture, but that really stings! Maybe it's time for a new approach.

Thank you for the advice. We will need to get some more products. He has a skin prep but it has alcohol in it so it lights him up when he uses it.

I have some Eakin Seals...came in an introductory packet of stuff. Do you use thos instead of the wafer or in addition to the wafer? If you use it instead, then how do you get a bag on?

I appreciate your help.
