Earlier this year my daughter was approached by the producers of Tosh.0. They wanted to do a segment based on her You Tube videos she posts to help others with ostomy issues, surgery problems, etc. She had a colectomy with J-pouch formation almost 3 years ago and has had one bad complication after another. One way she deals with it is by trying to be a support to others with similar health issues. For those who don't know this program, Daniel Tosh spends 30 minutes making fun of people who post videos on You Tube. He can be cute, but mostly he has a teenage boy sense of humor and can be crass, rude and sometimes mean. I cautioned her that this could have terrible repercussions, but she really has a desire to spread the word about
IBD and ostomies, in hopes of normalizing it and creating awareness to raise money for research. So, her segment will be airing Tuesday night, 12/3/13 on Comedy Central. I am very proud of her and think she is much braver than I would be. I so hope it will be positive but I know it will all be about
poop. Though I almost never post anything here, I wanted to let you know this was airing. Your
openess and willingness to help others has been such a support to me. Anyway, the promo says: Tuesday, on an ALL NEW episode of Tosh.0, we give this courageous crapper a well-deserved CeWEBrity Profile, and remind you all to stay positive, even after life hands you a big ol' bag of s**t.

Oh my gosh, I knew this was going to be on, but I wasn't expecting it to be someone from around here.

She did a good job. I wish Tosh hadn't gone on and on about
poop there for a minute, but what can you expect ;).
I'm very glad it went well. Funny (not in a cruel way, but poking fun at everyone) and informative.

I saw the segment and the extended interview online, she was fantastic!! I can't believe he touched Trixie...TOO funny!! It's always interesting to hear how different us ostomates can be....I would be so bummed if I couldn't eat raw veggies. Though, in the grand scheme of all we've been through...I guess it's no big deal!

Laura has received many positive comments from her ostomy/IBD friends. A couple of people commented about
her sitting down to change, using a towel and the clear bag. That video was done a couple of years ago, shortly after she was discharged from a 19 day hospital stay and she didn't feel strong enough to stand. She also stoppped using the clear bag after a month or so. Anyway, she has a good sense of humor and was hoping to "normalize" life with an ostomy. I was relieved that he was nicer to her than I expected.

Yes, the humor is immature in places, but he doesn't belittle her at all, which is great. Lots of potential for education, and she did do a great job!

She did an amazing job! I was so happy to see that, while doing his usual thing, he actually did ask some good questions. And he likely raised awareness among a segment that might normally not be as sensitive. Awesome.

She did such a great job, I loved it! I agree, Tosh was shockingly nice and asked a lot of good questions!! My only complaint would be the very end when she empties her bag into the sink...
Before I watched the video I saw people posting about
this on another board I read (unrelated to ostomies/UC) and they kept saying "He put his finger in it!" and I was *shocked* that she would let him do a digital exam of her stoma... I've had surgeons do it a couple of times and you have to be really careful! Anyway now that I've seen that he's just *touching* it I'm like "OK, no big deal".

I thought the whole point of the sink was so she could wash off the school bus?

I think she did a great job. I have only told my immediate family and four friends about
my ostomy. I really don't like talking about
it, so I commend her for being so brave and
open

Yeah, but it came out of the bag... IDK, some people asked me when I had my ostomy if I emptied it into the sink (and they thought that was gross) so it's a sore spot for me. I don't know why people think it would go anywhere other than the toilet!

ActiveUCer, you were right. They had her empty into the sink so she could wash off the school bus. I guess she could have swished it around in the toilet to clean it off, lol.
Pluot, Sorry it was a sore spot, and of course, she would never empty in the sink. I know it was wierd, but she had no say in what got used or cut. She was there recording for 4-5 hours and did not know what the final version would be like.

She was great. Interestingly, I've seen the video from the beginning of that clip in the past. She's adorable and an amazing inspiration for so many people. Thanks for sharing.

I've spent 55 years traveling in a rough man's world, from being a cowboy, a Recon Marine Team Leader, a wilderness guide, packer and wrangler, an attorney and many other professions. I've searched high and low and alone for a hero to emulate. I've been exposed to a large number of great people, strong, wise, compassionate, courageous, and who epitomize Rudyard Kipling's "If"; but all of them fail to pass my muster in some intangible, subjective regard that I can't quite put my finger on.
Then I find the only two people I would call "Hero" and I find them on Tosh.0: Your daughter and that Jessica girl who dances her affirmations on the bathroom sink counter. Both are out in the world, defending something good and doing it with goodness in an intangible, subjective way that I can't quite put my finger on. A machine gun nest is one thing, but a world full of negativity and cynics is truly overwhelming odds. To face those odds, not with push-back or violence or response in kind, but with centered strength and happiness is really truly amazing. We need more folks like your girl in this world. You did something right.
Is this corny? Yeah, so what? Thanks to you and thanks to her.

That's so awesome! I'm a big fan of Tosh and his boyish comedy. My wife showed me the segment when it aired and it's on my DVR as I type this, I've kept it because it's easy to show that segment to family and friends and it also makes me smile. That aired during a tough flare for me and definitely helped with my decision to have the surgery. I haven't had the jpouch yet, just the colectomy and things are pretty good.
Thank you to you and your daughter!

Thank you to James Riley for your kind comments. I wish I could take credit for her being the way she is. From the time she was 3 or 4 years old, she was aware of others feelings and demonstrated an empathy beyond that of many adults. She has the ability to light up a room, but has suffered pain and fear in the last 4 years that no one should experience, yet so many on this board have.
Rabbit, I am amazed that Tosh segment turned out the way it did. I have watched a few episodes this season and they are so raunchy. But I'm thankful she agreed to do it and gave positive exposure of what an ileostomy is, to a group of people that likely would not know about
them, in a way that was fun. She just started a support group, along with another woman, in Chicago, to help herself and others deal with their chronic illness/IBD issues.
