Poked a small hole in my ostomy bag..

Hi, I'm new to these forums. I looked around a bit for something similar to this post I'm creating and came up empty. My question is - has anyone ever poked small holes on their ileostomy bags by mistake when emptying? It seems mine has a very small cut around the area where it opens up, but it's very small, yet if squeezed, some stuff comes through. I'm using hollister bags, and I've been using them for a month. I'm still kinda new to my ileostomy, had my surgery September 30th.

Hi, and welcome! You shouldn't have any holes in the pouch. Are they all like that even before you put them on? If so, you might have gotten a bad batch and should be returned...unless this is something new that I have never heard about. I use Convatec and have never had that problem. It seems this could lead to odor problems among other things. I'm sure others will chime in soon and hopefully some Hollister users can give more help.

There shouldn't be any and they shouldn't tear but that doesn't mean they can't. I've had the part that holds the velcro piece on the Hollister ones come completely off when I wiped the end off! If your'e using a two piece I would just swap the pouch itself out and see if the next one does it too.

Thank you both for the informative replies. So this morning I kind of realized why the bag had the small cut. It was next to the piece that holds the velcro tab. I was applying pressure with the ends of my fingers with the nails pretty much. I noticed the cut was right at the spot where I applied pressure. I changed my bag and wafer this morning, I just have to be more careful when I close the bag after emptying I guess. Hopefully this helps anyone if it happens to them :-)

     I had problems with bags breaking on me when I used Hollister.  I switched to the Coloplast Sensura one piece bags over three years ago and never looked back. They are awesome yeah !

@Christine1946 I did try those coloplast bags during my bag trial phase soon after surgery. The adhesive on the back of those wouldn't stick to my skin, like if my skin was alien to it lol... They are great bags though, despite it not sticking to my belly :-D

That happened to me once too, at the same spot, and now that you mention it, probably for the same reason :) But that was once in seven months, not typical.

I sometimes get a little hole because I'm in water a lot (swim and baths) and sometimes the little velcro circles on the coloplast bags come off, and then the adhesive sticks to the bag and I tear it a bit.

I patch it with a piece of sure seal (tegaderm), and it's fine. One time the scissors slipped when I was cutting the wafer on a one piece and I tore the bag... I fixed that w/duct tape and it held fine.

That used to happen to me and then I started putting medical tape Across that part and it solved the problem. It's also much easier to close And it's not as sharp against my skin.

I use one piece Hollisters and in two years I've had three holes. All in the same place. Just above the velcro. I don't worry about it, but I keep an eye on that spot.

The tape ideas are awesome, I guess duct tape does work for everything hehe. Might have to try the medical tape idea if it happens again. It's not a worrisome problem I guess, but then again it has only happened once to me and I'm still a newbie ostomate :-D
