Has this happened to anyone? I feel like every few nights my bag gets sooo full of gas that it wants to pop like a balloon. The other night it came off the wafer a bit and I had a small leak, nothing too bad, but still concerning. The gas doesn't wake me up at night also, so it's a bit scary to think the bag my pop off and let my poop fall all over the place, sorry i know, too much info

Do you wear a 2-piece or 1-piece? It's never happened to me with a 1-piece, well not while sleeping. It did happen once when I was too lazy to get up and empty the bag, even though I could see and feel it was like a balloon. The pressure eventually forced the wafer to 'pop' from the skin (no popping sound, though), and the contents spilled all over me and the sheet :-/
But I've never had anything like that happen in my sleep and I have woken up with a 'balloon' bag a fair number of times.

I've never had a two piece "pop" off. I've not quite gotten it sealed and had a leak. It's come a bit loose and leaked. But never completely popped off.
I do like wearing the belt available from the ostomy company when I can though. It's a piece of elastic with special clips that slide into the rings that are on the sides of the bag.

Hi NiceCupOfTea - I use the two piece hollister bags, I tried a few 1-piece bags during my trial period, but never could get used to them. Sorry you had to go through that spill, waking up at night can be a bit of a challenge sometimes, specially when you're very tired, I just hope I can find the strength to get up and empty when I have to regardless of how tired I am.

@ActiveUcer - Hmm, maybe my bag was a bit loose, I did think about that, but no way I could find out if it was my mistake or the bag being too full of gas. I have been making sure it's really in there tight since the leak happened, just in case it was my fault lol..

Yes this has happened to me once. I ate a big meal around nine and did not empty in the middle of the night. It was disgusting!

It's always the bottom that I somehow manage to miss! I also stopped "burping" the bag in the middle of the night (slightly opening the seal to let air out). It just ended badly.

@Smd729 - Im afraid of eating after 6pm because of that :( I see you had a fistula problem. Have you noticed improvement after getting the ileostomy?
@ActiveUcer - If I open the bag at night I would probably make a big mess, i'm usually like a zombie when i wake up at night.

I usually eat by seven or seven thirty, and I haven't had a problem as long as I empty before I go to bed. I wake up at six and empty again as soon as I wake up.
Yes, the miserable fistulas are finally gone. I had so many that I had my rectum and anus removed as well. Are you still having problems with abscesses. Is the plan to reverse the ileostomy?

@smd729 I think mine are healing up slowly, but have had a couple that already healed completely. The plan for my ileostomy might be temporary, but it can also be permanent because the crohns could bring back the abscesses and fistulas if info through reversal. My doctor said that, but only because no medicine worked on me. Humira seemed to give me a bit of hope but that was gone quick. After the ileostomy I was taken off all meds and I do not miss humira injections they're pretty annoying lol.. To be honest, I don't even know if I would want to get reversal and risk losing all my progress, but that's just me.

I have never had the bag pop off of the flange, but I have had the wafer start leaking overnight. My usually long stoma shrinks A LOT when I sleep, almost flush with my skin. That means when there is output at night, it gets under my wafer more easily and can loosen it up. While waking up to a leak is no fun, at least it hasn't happened to me anyplace else! I do get a pretty big "gas bag" most every night, and feel like it could pop the bag off, but it never has.
A side note about not eating past a certain time to help reduce output... I know everything is different for everyone, but I have been told by docs and nurses that not eating for long periods of time can actually lead to more gas and output that is more liquidy. I have found this to be true. Not to mention, I do NOT have enough self control to not snack late at night or go 12 plus hours without eating!! HA!

@UCwhat? - I do tend to get more gas when I don't eat for long periods, but not too bad, the output is also becomes watery. I work on a 7:30am to 4:00pm schedule, most of the times I just eat a small snack at noon, sometimes I eat something for breakfast and lunch, but nothing too big. I eat my bigger meal when I get home, but it's not that big of a meal anyways. By the time I have to go to bed, my dinner is about 90% out and into my bag, and the other 10% just comes out with the watery output while I night. I guess the big reason I don't eat too late is because I get very uncomfortable when i get thicker output at night when i'm trying to fall asleep, more of a mental thing than anything else I think lol. Regarding the 12 hours without food, well that would be torture, I'd rather not sleep instead of starve myself hahaha...

I was going to mention that not eating could be causing the gas...Can you eat a light snack of crackers or pretzels between dinner and bedtime?
My family eats late (between 7 and 8 pm) and I eat a full meal (I don't eat processed foods so it's protein and veggies) and do well with sleeping. I'll know if I'm going to have to get up during the night by what I eat for dinner...so if we get a pizza it's a given I'll be up!
It takes some trial and error so don't set your mind on right/wrong...we are all different and respond differently to things.
Just a question on the fistulas and no meds...are/is your fistula open with a seton?
Posted 1/9/2014 7:08 PM (GMT 0)
@Equestrian Mom - Yup my fistulas still have Setons in them, I can't wait for the day my doctor tells me they're coming off :-D

I've had my stoma since June, and yes, I have had it pop right off, at least three times, that I can think of. Once, I rolled over on it, whoops!! ..once cause I ate a large meal really late, and once again...didn't get up through the night and empty it.. What a mess!
