@polishdan - yea haha, that's the way it is. Plus the military is like the biggest Frat you could ever be apart of so ball breaking comes with the territory and if you can't handle then it just gets worse haha. I miss that crap. And that "sensor stuff" was an Uto correct from my phone I meant "get some sensura (name of the coloplast line) on order"

@Jody - okay cool, I was totally nervous about it. At first I thought it was an infection but they said it's very rare to get an infection in there and if I did the whole abdomen would be involved which is scary. I'm changing the wafer on Saturday again so I'll apply more powder in there. I've heard of them keeping it open and covered it's crazy how the body adapts. Hopefully it clears up quickly. Were you in the hospital because it pulled away from the sutcher line? Or was this post-op?

I was post-op. Had many complications, ended up with a nasal gastro tube and didn't eat for almost four days. I was there for two weeks.

A week after my colectomy at home I woke at 5 AM in abdominal pain. Ambulance to small local hospital. Peritonitis. Too serious for our small 12 bed hospital to handle. flew by helicopter to large hospital north of Detroit. I remember the surgeon saying to me "We haven't lost anybody yet and you are not going to ruin our record". I'm glad I didn't ruin their record because he probably would have beaten the snot out of me if I had!!!

@Polishdan - Changed the setup this morning. The BCT worked pretty well, none of the adhesive was left behind which was awesome and I just had to use warm water to wipe off the remaining BCT. The skin didn't look nearly as irritated either. The skin where the fabric adhesive sat was a slightly different story but I didn't use the BCT there. This time around I applied the BCT to cover everything, including the fabric so we will see how my skin reacts.

On another note, that area that was pulling from the suture line looks a lot better. The stoma powder really dried out all the mucous. I put some Nycin (sp?) powder on it this time around because my WOCN sent it. Hopefully thats my real underlying issue. I'll post an update in another couple of days. Thanks again.

Had my first change using friars balsam.
I first used friars last Saturday. Had a few problems when doing the change..stoma was working, forgot to dry the friars. So I told hubby nothing ever works exactly right the first time you use it, and said even if I had problems, we would give the friars another try. Throughout the week, there were occasions I thought it was leaking but nothing ever showed up under the tape.
Fast forward to Saturday morning, time for bag change. When I removed it, yes ..under the wafer there had been some leakage which was what had been causing me problems. Removed the bag, had my shower, put on the new bag. And this time things were better during the change. Stoma wasn't putting out, I remembered to dry friars, things just ran smoother. So, we will give friars another try, hopefully, I don't have any leakage under the wafer.
Both times, I put friars around stoma, and completely under the tape. I also applied it around the edge of the tape, where my skin is rough and sore. it's still quite red, but feels better, less itching, not as scaly., etc.

Glad you are not giving up. Do you use any powders or any wipes? At times I have some seepage around the stoma but friar's protects the skin. Hope you rinse the shower soap off real good. I do not shower without the wafer/pouch. No soap on the wafer area. Ever. Did the wafer come off leaving your skin clean? Friar's does not come off with the tape border.

Dan, nope, the last two times, when using friars, I haven't used stoma powder, skin barrier or Remove adhesive remover. And yes, my skin was pretty clean when I removed it. When showering I just basically let water run over it, I don't necessarily soap it up.
I'm not entirely sold on friars yet. Sometimes the area immediately around my stoma feels like little pin pricks. Haven't quite figured out yet what that is all about. It's been about 36 hrs since the last bag change, and it's started again this evening. But Sat and Sun, output has been very thick (too much rice, and too many banana cookies maybe!) so maybe that's what's contributing to it.

How long have you had your ileo? Is it permanent? Is your stoma extended or retracted......or both, like mine.

I had colon surgery in June. Ileo is temp, and I'm waiting on a date in 1-3 months. Yes, I think mine is like yours. I wear a convex wafer, it's very small, not extended and only seems to extend when there's output, but even then it's much smaller then most I've seen online.
It's just the area very tight around my stoma is so very red and sore this last change.. I just don't know what's going on with that.

Are you still using Friar's? I don't worry about getting it on my stoma. Does not seem to bother it. Don't give up on it.

Yes, I've put friars on my last two bag changes, and nothing else. I gotta say tho, I'm having a bad day here. It does nothing for the skin under the tape, and that's what my problem is. That skin is so sore right now, I'm having a hard time to stand upright and walk. I just tried putting some more around the edges and around the tape, that skin is pretty bad too. Like when you have a band aid on too long and the skin around the edges is all icky, multiplied by 100 tho.

I'm thinking you and I aren't having the same problems and that's why friars isn't working as well for me. You put nothing under the tape and have no problems. Today I'm having nothing but problems.

Oh forgot to add... The once I touched my stoma with the Q tip with friars on it... Wowsers! That hurt!

Your problem is under the tape border? Have you considered cutting the tape off?
I am really surprised that Friar's hurt on your stoma.

The wafer adhesion should hold. I believe there are wafers without tape.

JodyGM~it sounds like you are allergic to the tape...I would try another brand or if you have a lot of supplies and since it's temporary you can cut off the tape to give you some relief (you could always reinforce with pink tape or something similar that you aren't allergic to). I used to cut it off my Convatec wafers before I switched to Coloplast (that doesn't have any tape).

I've thought maybe I was allergic...however all my problems are only at the top of the wafer (and down one side a little bit, but that starts at the top too). When I called the ostomy nurse, she thinks maybe it's a bacterial thing. First she thought cause I wasn't drying it and bacteria was able to grow underneath, but nope, blow dry after every shower. She suggested I try some other product ..I wrote the name down somewhere.

@polishdan - I went and saw my WOCN yesterday. I'm now using the Coloplast stuff with convexity and things are really good. My skin was very red and she said that the tape fabric of convatec was probably giving me a reaction (medical adhesives have given me reactions before) so we switched and I haven't experienced nearly as much itching and what-not. I did bring the BCT and tell her about it. She was already very familiar with the stuff and said it's been around a long time and does work really well. I told her I've met some people on the boards who swear by it. The only caveat she had about it was an ingredient that starts with a "g", I can't remember the name, but she said some people have a reaction to it. I don't think I did. She then showed me this spray from Hollister that you spray on the actual appliance and works in a similar fashion. She said its the new and improved BCT. Its called "Medical Adhesive" by Hollister (Stock # 7730). I have yet to try it but I will give it a go.

She did my wafer change while I was there and I don't know about you guys but when I change its a process. I usually take about 30 minutes and really clean off the skin and let things air out and dry out completely before I start putting on my barriers and prepping the wafer. She did it in all off 2 minutes and just wiped down the surface, there was still some crusty spots on there and everything. I was just surprised considering how meticulous I've been. I haven't had any issues with setup or anything and its holding pretty good (I wear a belt 99% of the time anyways). Just different I guess.

Hi! I'm glad that you are getting a bit of relief with a wafer change. Also glad to hear that you are able to use the convex wafer - it did wonders for me :)

I had a WOCN do a change for me a few weeks after I got home from the hospital and my experience was same as yours - it took less than five minutes. When I do a change it takes me about 20 minutes, I really clean the skin well with warm water and gauze and dry it thoroughly, which adds a bit of time. In any case, I'm glad the setup is working well for you so far!

How are you liking the Ostomy Secrets wrap? I think you had bought one - are you still using it? Do you still like it?

A change only takes a few minutes. Friars leaves the skin clean so there really is no need for a lengthy cleaning. Remember...less is better.

@poucher - The convex so far is awesome. yea I still have and use the wrap. I mainly only use it when I leave the house. However, its still weird to get used to. I'm still adjusting to having the bag and the belt on and when I leave I also have the wrap on so its definitely still an adjustment. With the wrap though, I do feel more confident because I'm not constantly making sure the bottom of my bag isn't hanging below my shirt which is cool.

@polishdan - Like I said I only used the friars once so far and it left a ton of yellow residue on my skin which I had to scrub off. But I think that was only because it was on for maybe 20 hours so I don't know. I still have to adjust to things. I also clean the skin really well and let everything air out so i'm not constantly wiping or applying some product for those 30 minutes, most of which I'm just walking around the house airing that bad boy out.

I just got out of the hospital day before yesterday, and my stoma nurse came by. I just wanted her to take a look as they'd stuck tubes and fingers in my stoma to clear the blockage, plus it was time for an appliance change.

I have been using the BCT, but not by itself .... with my longish stoma and frequent baths/swims just seems not enough (although I haven't tried it alone in a while), so I also use a barrier ring (and also some strip paste on the outside of the wafer), but I like the BCT better than powder, so much easier, and I put it under the wafer too.

In any case, she went on and on about how good my skin looked ... of course, she mostly sees people w/problems, and she also talked about how good I was at changing the pouch now (again, she mostly sees new people and people w/problems....)

But when I mentioned the BCT, she had a similar reaction to Rabbit's nurse -- said they use it all the time at the hospital to make various things stick, could understand why I liked it better than powder. She didn't mention the cautions or other product, though.
